Google docs connector problem

I'm having trouble using the Zotero Connector with Google Docs. When I try to add citations, for a split second it looks like a window will open but then after few seconds I just get the message that it can't connect to the desktop
I have double checked if everything is running synced connected enabled etc as well as:

Checked that Zotero desktop is running.
Verified permissions for the Connector.
Updated Zotero and the Connector.
Used Chrome (supported browser).
Restarted browser.
Reinstalled Connector.
Disabled other extensions/security software.
Checked for updates.

I've seen no option related to Google Docs integration in the desktop app. This is frustrating. What's the fix?

What's the exact message you're receiving?

Can you provide a Debug ID from the Connector?
  • I get "Is Zotero running?
The Zotero Connector was unable to connect to the Zotero desktop application. Connector can save some pages directly to your zotero.org account, but for better integration you should make sure Zotero is open before trying to save.

You can download Zotero or troubleshoot your connection if necessary" - when i try to download citation to desktop directly through connector, but then it still downloads the citation later

When I want to add the citation within google docs, just for a split second it looks like a window opens up but i cant do anything

    The Debug ID is D801991903

If you granted it permission to save directly to zotero.org, the Zotero app will pull down the item from your online library when it syncs, but you still need to fix the direct connection between the Connector and the app. See https://www.zotero.org/support/kb/connector_zotero_unavailable, linked from that dialog, for the troubleshooting steps. This is a problem on your computer that you'll need to debug.

(And that's a Debug ID from Zotero, not the Zotero Connector, but all the information we can provide on this is on the linked page.)
  • I followed all the steps on the troubleshooting page for google docs
I only need help with adding the citations to google docs

    Thanks!

Again, you need to follow the steps that I linked to, and that are linked from the dialog that you quoted. The saving problem is the same problem — there's nothing specific to Google Docs here. The Zotero Connector just can't talk to the desktop app at all, likely because of your ad blocker.
  • I understand that, and I went through these steps again now
    I get
    HTTP server listening on 127.0.0.1:23119
but I dont know what else possibly could be blocking the connection
I performed all toruble shooting without security turned on, and with all chrome extensions (including adblocker) disabled
  • Do you have any tips on how to figure out what is it thats in the way at this point?

Everything we can say about this is on the linked page. I'm pretty sure your ad blocker was still enabled in the Debug ID you provided — it shows lots of "The user aborted a request" errors, which point to something within the browser blocking requests. One way or another, something in your browser or on your computer is preventing the Zotero Connector from talking to the desktop app. This isn't a problem in Zotero itself in any way.

But you also omitted any information on a lot of the steps. "HTTP server listening on 127.0.0.1:23119" is near the very end, after you've tried in other browsers, but you didn't say anything about what you actually tried before that and what happened.
