tracking back source by footnote and open it from word document

Hi together.
I have 2 questions: I am looking for the possibility to track back a source I have put in the footnote. It is the case when I have three sources listed, for example with Statista 2022b p.3; Statista 2022c p.3 and another footnote with Statista 2022d p. 7. By the current citation style I cannot recognize the exact source.

The second question is: how can see in the information about the book/article etc. how do Zotero decides to set a, b, d...by the source?

Thank you in advance!
  • Place your cursor in the citation text and click the Add/Edit Citation button to bring up the citation window for the item. Click on the blue bubble for the item, then click Open in My Library.
  • Thank you for the description. But the final part: "then click Open in My Library" is not available in my case. Do you have a better idea?

Just to be concrete: in my example in the footnote there are
    Footnote 155: Statista 2022f
    Footnote 156: Statista 2023d
Because I have a long list of Statista Citations for the years 2022 and 2023, I cannot identify to which citation exactly do "2022f" refers. This is quite frustrating to make changes in a second time ...
  • That means the item isn't linked to your Zotero library anymore, which in itself isn't great (because, e.g., you can't fix metadata anymore). You can do right-click --> Toggle Field codes on the footnote to see the machine-readable version of the item, which should be reasonably clear, if a bit hard to read).
  • Actually I haven't "unlinked citations" till now.
At the moment, when I go with the cursor in the footnote, this is highlighted in a grey tone -> I thought this means the reference in the footnote is linked to the Zotero library.

Do you mean by "You can do right-click --> Toggle Field codes on the footnote to see the machine-readable version of the item", that I should go for example in the 155: Statista 2022f and here do the right-click? If so, I just tried it, but I cannot find any "Field codes on the footnote" (P.S. I am using a German Program on a MAC")
  • Just one comment more: I don't think that the footsnotes are unlinked. When I refresh my document, then Zotero actually refreshes changes I made in the Zotero Library ... If they were no more linked, than I suppose the refreshment would not happen?!?

If you're clicking on the blue bubble in the (default, not classic) citation dialog and "Open in My Library" doesn't appear in the popup, the item you created that citation from isn't in your current Zotero library. Other citations could still be linked, but you'd have to reinsert that one from the current item in your library. This could happen if, say, you deleted items instead of merging them.

See Word field codes for toggling field codes. You can toggle individual citations via right-click or the entire document with the shortcut key given there.
  • Unlinked isn't the same as unlinked from your Zotero database: citations can still be active and linked to *Zotero* (relying on metadata stored in the Word doc) and be unlinked from the Zotero database, i.e. no longer update from metadata there.

This can be the case for individual citations in a document (e.g., if you deleted their counterpart in your library), it's not an all or nothing question.

If you're sure the item in question is still updating from changes in your library, (or you're not seeing the Open in My Library option for an item that's still updating) make sure you're looking in the right place. This is what you'd be seeing. Note this is only available in the default, quick format version of the citation dialog: https://www.zotero.org/support/_media/word_integration/citation-dialog-affixes-5.png?w=350&cache=nocache&tok=26cf5e
