Some citations use "et." and some use "and"

  • I had the same problem. But from French to English.

I tried to change the language at (i) the preferences of Zotero, (ii) in Word, and (iii) when I chose the citation style, I could change it in English.

In word, I have both forms (et.) and (and).

I don't know what else to do.
  • What citation style? Can you provide examples of the different entries?

Generally speaking, you would only have both forms if some citations aren't actually active citations. See Existing Citations Not Detected for how to check.
  • Hello ! and thank you for your answer.

I first made sure the document in Word was in English too.

When possible, I tried multiple citations and changed them to different languages
from the Word document and Zotero preferences. I first tried the APA 7th and 6th versions, then the Chicago Manual of Style 17th edition (author-date).

What happened was that some citations appeared in the text or the references page with "et." and sometimes with "and" or "&."

I checked on the desktop app and the website of Zotero to change the predetermined language from English to Spanish (just to see what it could change). In the "Creator column," some references changed to Spanish (the same one that appeared before in English), but most of them still appeared in French. Those who changed from En to Espanish, also changed in the word document when I changed the language to Spanish, but those in French didn't.

I don't know how some citations are registered in French and others in English since I do everything from the same computer and place.

I transferred the document, even if the citations were still active... and in the wors scénario, I'll do it individually.

  • So you're saying they show as "et" in the Zotero interface, not just the document? That would suggest a data entry error. Could you paste one of the items that remains in French, both the in text citation and the bibliography entry here?
  • Yes, the "et" is presented in the Zotero interface whether the language settings change in English or Spanish.

    Thank you for your time
  • No, I mean for you to post the bibliography entry and in text citation that you're seeing in your document here, not just a URL to the article.
