Resolving PDF Opening Issues and WebDAV Verification Failed Error in Zotero Synchronization

Hello,

I need your assistance with a problem I'm experiencing. I have Zotero installed on both my MacBook Air and iPad Air, and until recently, I had no trouble accessing my PDFs on both devices. However, I'm currently facing an issue with opening PDFs. When I add a reference using my iPad, it appears in the library, and the same happens when I add a reference using my computer—it shows up in the iPad's library as well. However, I encounter difficulties when trying to open files downloaded on the iPad using my computer, and vice versa.

The synchronization seems to be functioning correctly in other aspects. However, in my computer's Zotero application, I notice a red exclamation mark in the top right corner, accompanied by an error message stating, "WebDAV verification failed. Check your file synchronization settings in the synchronization tab under Zotero preferences." Despite attempting to resolve the issue by restarting Zotero on both my iPad and MacBook, the problem persists.

I'm uncertain about the cause of this issue and would greatly appreciate your assistance.

Best regards

A WebDAV verification failure means what it says — the server you entered isn't responding like a normal WebDAV server. If you provide a Debug ID for a Verify Server attempt, we might be able to tell you more, but this is a problem with your WebDAV configuration or WebDAV server.

  • Thank you! I'm a little unsure, but now I have followed the steps, and I have the following ID.

An error occurred during a connection to dav.box.com.

    Encountered end of file

    Error code: PR_END_OF_FILE_ERROR
    Box doesn't support WebDAV anymore.
  • Hello and thank you for this.

So, the problem is solved. I am wondering if I were to connect to another storage space such as Google Drive or buy more space in Zotero. Does this mean all my saved files will disappear? Will I have to download each reference individually again when I change storage?

All your data and files are stored in your local Zotero library by default. Unless you've switched to "as needed" file-sync mode and this isn't the computer where you added the files, you have everything on your computer.

If you switch to a different WebDAV server, you might need to use Reset File Sync History from the Sync → Reset pane of the Zotero settings to force it to reupload all files to the new server. That should happen automatically if you switch to Zotero Storage.
