no sync

Hi
When I try to sync, I have the following message
This version of Zotero is too old to sync. Please upgrade to a current version to continue syncing.
But it does not upgrade. Error 1728562994

Using Zotero 5.0.58 on MacBook under 10.13.6

thanks

  • What do you mean by "it does not upgrade"?

But you can just reinstall Zotero from the download page.
  • thanks. Did reinstall, worked, only lost a few references
  • You shouldn't have lost any references. Reinstalling doesn't affect your data.
  • hi
it is getting worse. I have now updated my system on Mac to Monterrey 12.6.5. I reinstalled Zotero but cannot retrieve my data. I have tried various strategies, no ways. PS. I still have Zotero on an older computer with the data but dont know how to copy and transfer
  • See https://www.zotero.org/support/kb/transferring_a_library on moving the data from another computer. Beyond that, you'd have to give us more than "I have tried various strategies" in order for us to understand what's going on and how to help.
  • You’d have to explain what’s happening now and provide another Report ID.
  • thks
I thought there was a pbm on the user name, so I checked, but it is the same on both comp. I changed password. It is difficult for me to understand what I shld do; I thought the data as stored on Zotero and that it wld appear once I had downloaded the app.
  • Again, we can't help you without a Report ID.
  • @maikoro: To be clear, though, you've never synced data with the account you're posting from. There's no data in the online library, as you can see on this site.

See Changes Not Syncing for troubleshooting steps and what we would need to help you further.

    thanks

the login is under my name michel lafon, the email adress being [removed].

how do I get a report ID?
  • I linked to instructions for providing a Report ID, but see Changes Not Syncing for what you need to do and provide.

@maikoro: But you're just syncing with different accounts, as it explains on that page. The username you provided and the email address you provided are from different accounts. The email address is from the empty account you're posting from.

You need to use the same account to sync on all devices, and you should delete the other account that doesn't have data — the one you're posting from — to avoid future confusion.
  • How do I know which is which? the data on the old comp is under my name michel lafon, so I tried to open the account under that name on the new one, then requesting a new password, but it remains void
  • "michel lafon" has your data, but you don't need us to tell you this — you can just click Web Library at the top of this page. You just need to sync with that account on both computers.

If you've forgotten the password, you can reset it as long as you still have access to that email address. If you don't, email support@zotero.org with a link to this thread.
  • Thanks
When I open that weblibrary, under my name, it remains blank on the new comp. Shld the old one be online at the same time?

You seem to be confusing the web library and the Zotero app. The web library has nothing to do with any specific computer — it just shows the data for the account you've logged into on this website.

Again, set up syncing with "michel lafon" in the Sync pane of the Zotero preferences on both computers and your data will sync. There's really nothing more we can say on this.
  • thks
I will try, but I am scared it syncs with the void library rather than the one with the data. Still if my data is on the server why is it not coming to my new computer when I log in?
  • I did sync on the old comp - also updating Zotero - but still nothing comes up on the « new » mac. Still the user name and email address are similar. I am lost
  • Is it possible it has something to do with internet settings?
  • thks. I m sorry to bother you so long but I am dependent on Zotero for all my references, especially in a book in progress. Not retrieving it threatens my ability to pursue.

Checking on the list, it seems the library does not correspond.
in the new comp, I see "my libraries" with no further details; in the old one, all librairies appear.

If the issue is the account, then, how can I identify the right one? the user name is the same and the email address also - I keep checking. Can there be 2 accounts under the same user name?

As I've said repeatedly, your data is in the "michel lafon" account, so that's the one you need to set up syncing with in the Zotero app on both computers. This has nothing to do with the web library.

If you're still having trouble, you need to follow the instructions on the page I linked to and provide the information it asks for under "Further troubleshooting". There's no point in posting here without doing that, as we have no other way of helping you.
  • Thks
I have opened the debug journal, and obtained the following ID
    Debug ID D1204045828

    Hope it helps

Yes, and that shows you syncing with the "michellafon" account, not "michel lafon". This has nothing to do with the display name you've set for the "michellafon" account on this site (which is "michel lafon") or your forums username (which is "maikoro").

You need to enter literally "michel lafon" — absolutely nothing else — into the Username field in the Sync pane of the preferences, enter your password for that account, and click Set Up Syncing. That's it. There's just nothing more I can say on this.
  • thks, at least the pbm is identified.
However I cannot log in using michel lafon - I get reply, no space is allowed in the user name slot…. (which is why I entered in one word)

I don't know why you think that. You can absolutely enter spaces in that field. Can you take a screenshot, upload it somewhere (Google Drive, Dropbox, etc.), and provide a link here?
  • this is what I get

    Your username can't contain spaces

will try to send a screenshot
  • /Users/maikoro12/Desktop/Capture d’écran 2023-04-30 à 13.55.48.png

this is the screen shot but not sure you can open it

No, I explained how to share a screenshot, but it doesn't matter. That message is from the website — you seem to be trying to register a new account or change your existing username or something. We're talking about the Sync pane of the Zotero desktop app — the thing you're actually trying to sync. All you need to do is set up syncing with the correct account in that pane.

I'm afraid I can't help you further here. There's just nothing else to say that I haven't said already multiple times.
