Question regarding copy-pasting in Word and maintaining references

Hello,

I use Zotero as my reference manager. When I want to copy-paste a piece of written text that contains references to another word document, the references are copied literally. For instance, when I copy paste this sentence into another Word document:

“Words Words Words Words Words Words Words Words.(1) Words Words Words Words (2).”

1. Source A
2. Ibid

Then the text in the file to which the text was copypasted becomes:

“Words Words Words Words Words Words Words Words.(1) Words Words Words Words (2).”

1. Source A
2. Ibid

However, say that I want to change something in the text, and remove the first sentence and hence reference (1), then reference (2) does not automatically adapt to “Source A”, but remains “Ibid”.

“Words Words Words Words Words Words Words Words.(1) Words Words Words Words (2).”

1. Source B
2. Ibid

Because of this, the referencing is not accurate anymore, since in reference (2), Ibid actually refers to source A, yet this was not updated.

How can I change my settings such that references are automatically updated, also when copy pasting between files?

Thank you very much in advance!
  • This should actually work as you describe.

You can either hit the "Refresh" button and the references should update or turn on "Automatic updates" so it does that every single time you change something (not recommended for large documents).

For that though citations needs to be still active citations. Can you confirm they are? (grey background when clicking on them)

Otherwise, you can force a re-render of the citations also by changing style. E.g switch to APA and then back to your note style.
