HELP : can't open Zotero on Mac OS 13.3

I can't open Zotero anymore, I tried everything I saw on forums but nothing works. This is what I have at the start of the app :

"Une erreur s'est produite au démarrage de Zotero.

Vous pouvez signaler ce problème sur le forum Zotero.

From previous event:

Please help me, I really need to fix that soon.. Thank you.
  • Can you provide a Debug ID for Zotero startup through this error, using the "Restart with Logging Enabled…" option?
  • Actually I can't do anything. A window just pop with this text with a blue button at the bottom "search update" but there's no updates and then it closes.
  • From the page:
(If you're not able to access the Help menu, see Reporting Startup Errors instead.)
  • I tried, nothing works, the window with the error message won't let me do anything else. I also tried to logging in Terminal but I can't see what do I do from there

What exactly did you try, and what happened?

-ZoteroDebug should cause a separate window to show up, and you can press Cmd-` (backtick, above Tab) to switch to that window in order to submit the output, even if focus starts on the error dialog.

And you can certainly always log to the terminal on a Mac by following the given instructions.
  • Well step by step :
    - I copy paste :/Applications/Zotero.app/Contents/MacOS/zotero -ZoteroDebug in Terminal.
    - I got 3 windows : 1) the supposed normal Zotero completely empty and grey. 2) the error dialog 3) the debug output where I can't click "submit" even if I switch the focus with CMD `.

    There I am.
  • See the instructions for logging to a terminal window, then.
  • Yes, I just did that. And from here I'm stuck I don't know what to do. Sorry I'm bad for things like this, thank you for your patience and quick answers.
  • We can only help you if you say what you're doing and what's happening.
  • I pasted :/Applications/Zotero.app/Contents/MacOS/zotero -ZoteroDebugText
    And now I got 2 windows :
    - zotero in grey in the back
    - error dialog

and the Terminal with a lot of lines
  • Right, so we need those lines. Email them to support@zotero.org with a link to this thread, as it says in "Alternative: Logging to the Terminal".
  • Alright, Done.
  • OK, sorry, there's an unexpected numeric value in one of your Extra fields that's breaking an update:
    Type: 3
We'll fix this in a beta later today, but you can fix it right away by reinstalling 6.0.23, deleting that line (and any similar lines in other items), and then upgrading again to the latest version.
  • OK. Can you please tell me which sort of lines and how can I delete them to reinstall zotero ?

It's what I quoted above — "Type: 3" in one of your Extra fields, and any similar numeric values for Type.

You can search for "Type:" or paste 9LXLEISH into the search bar in All Fields & Tags mode.
  • Or just wait — we'll have a beta out with a fix for this in about 20 minutes.
  • Alright, I'll wait. Thank you
  • OK, fix is available now in the Zotero beta.

After opening your library once with that, you can switch back to the release version from the homepage.
  • Problem fixed. Thanks for the help, great support here.
