# Observation 1

I was searching a PDF file for the following phrase with the 'Whole words' option enabled: 'wars of national liberation'.

Result: Zotero returned no hits.

# Observation 2

When searching the same PDF with application PDFExpert in the same way, it found the concerning phrase.

# Observation 3

Returning to Zotero, I executed the search again, only this time, I added an additional whitespace between the words. Instead of 'wars of national liberation', I searched for 'wars of national liberation'.

Result: Zotero returned the correct phrase I was looking for.

# Conclusion

PDFExpert seems to compensate and anticipate for additional added whitespaces in PDF files, when searching keywords and phrases.

It would be grand if this could be added to the search of PDF files in Zotero too. At the moment I use PDFExpert to search and annotate in Zotero in order to avoid such a confusion.

Of course, the initial problem lies with the PDF file itself, but if Zotero could compensate for the 'errors', that would be truly a nice to have feature.
