Zotero references with hidden font break when updating references in Word 2019

Hello,

I'm using Microsoft Word 2019 with the Zotero ribbon from the Zotero.dotm file, which is located in the default startup folder. Our Zotero version is 6.0.19 and I'm on Windows 10.

I'm using this set up to edit large reports. Parts of these reports can be hidden using the Font.Hidden property. When these hidden text ranges contain Zotero references these will be picked up by Zotero's 'Refresh' button function as having been changed. The following error is shown:

<<
C:\Program Files (x86)\Zotero\zotero.exe
You have modified this citation since Zotero generated it. Do you want to keer your modificatoins and prevent future updates?
Clicking "YES" will precent Zotero from updateing this citation if you add additional citations, switch styles, or modify the item to which it refers.
Clicking "NO" will erase your changes.

Clicking "YES" would be very undesireable, since I might need to set parts of the document to not hidden later on and use up to date references in them.

The modified line doesn't show anything because the reference text's Font.Hidden property is set to true, I think. When clicking "NO" another error occurs:

<<
C:\Program Files (x86)\Zotero\zotero.exe
Zotero experienced an error updating your document.

The error report ID is 247309130

Subsequently the previously hidden reference that threw the error is added into the text as plain text (not a linked reference field). Which is not great either.

A simple, but probably undesireable, solution for the development team would be to skip references that have Font.Hidden = True when doing the refresh. Or maybe it would be possible to compare the original and the modified text while ignoring the Font.Hidden property?

Thanks for any help!
  • We have not got reports about this before and I'm not sure whether it's because such a rarely-used feature, or because it's been recently added, but I've created a ticket to track it.
  • Thanks adomasven! I hope it won't be too much of a hassle to fix.
