Import Annotations is greyed out

This discussion was created from comments split from: Unable to import annotations.
  • I have the similar problem. I used to highlight important information in pdf and then imported (import annotations command) them into obsidian. I use highlight not underline function, but the command is greyed out and is not working anymore.
  • (Please always start new threads for new issues. I've moved this to a new thread.)

Do you see the annotations in the PDF reader sidebar? Do they have a lock icon?

To show something, you can take a screenshot, upload it somewhere (Google Drive, Dropbox, etc.), and provide a link here.
  • Right, so then those are already in Zotero and there's nothing to import.
  • So, how can then import the notes to obsidian? Please see my question.
  • We don't have anything do with Obsidian integration. That's provided by one or more plugins.
  • Can I lock the annotations? It used to work well, but now something has changed. Obsidian, Word, whatever place I would like to copy annotations.
  • You're mixing up something. Annotations definitely never needed to be locked for any functionality (and there's no way to lock them, no).

What do you mean by "copy to Word"? What's the *exact* workflow you're looking for?
  • I understood from the answers that the issue with being unable to import annotations is related to the fact that they are unlocked. For me, the locking is not the problem. The problem is that I used to work in a way that I highlighted important parts of the text and then transferred annotations to Obsidian. If I remember correctly, I used the "import annotations" command for that. It took all highlighted text at once and it was very convenient. Now I can't do it anymore.

No, that's not the command you used. Import just turns PDF annotations into Zotero annotations (which isn't relevant in your case).
You may have used "Create note from annotations"?
  • Yes, you are right! But now there is no such command and I thought it must be the other one. Is creating notes from annotations possible and if yes, where this function can be found?
  • If you click on the note icon on the right, then the + sign at the top, you can select "Add Item Note from Annotations"
  • It worked! Thank you a lot, you made my life so much easier:)
