Can't edit citation; replaces with new cite in old footnote (EDIT: RESOLVED. I am dumb.)
I have been working with Zotero (Chicago, footnotes) in Word (recent version, not 365) (running both as user, not as admin). I've used Zotero for years. I've used Zotero on Word on this PC without issues until today. I believe the problem arose while (or shortly after) reviewing a document from a colleague (not sure if orig in Word or OpenOffice) that also containted Zotero.
Not sure why, but today it has begun to act up -- for both existing and new documents. When attempting to edit an existing citation (highlighting the cite number in the text and pressing "Add/Edit Citation" button in the ribbon), Zotero opens a new red box to enter the new cite, replacing the old citation in the footnote. If I press "ESC" to close the new window, it closes; but, it has removed the old footnote. If I press ctrl-Z, the old footnote returns. However, the corresponding footnote number and a greyed box reading "{Citation}" are placed at the end of the footnote text. I have attempted the following: problem occurs on old docs and new docs; switching footnotes/endnotes/ footnotes; refreshing Zotero; restarting both programs; restarting computer; reloading Zotero; verifying Word plug-in is installed and operational in Zotero-Preferences-Cite-Word-Processors....
Also, could one not highlight the citation number and right-click for a prompt to edit? I thought one could edit the cite that way instead of using the ribbon button....
Any ideas? Thanks in advance!

I suspect what may have happened is that the document I was reviewing a Word document (with Track Changes, as I did not yet know this could be an issue) and I may have highlighted a Word footnote and tried to edit it with Zotero.... He says that he did not use Zotero. But the issue persists across all my docs now. I have toggled fields, changed citation styles, instered and deleted a bibliography, etc. I have gone through the Troubleshoot you have sent also, to no avail. Thx again!
2. Open Word.
3. Write sample text. Instet new Zotero citation.
4. Select style: Chicago (full note); footnotes; fields; auto update
5. Enterd the citation. Footnote appears correct.
6. Enter more sample text, add another citation.
7. Highlight citation 1.
8. Press "Add/Edit Citation" button in Zotero ribbon.
9. New, empty red Zotero box opens. Old text in footnote for citation 1 replaced with {Citation} as it awaits new citation entry in red box.
10. If no new reference is selected and the "Esc" key is pressed to exit out of the new red box, the original citation 1 is gone, the corresponding footnote text is gone. Old citation 2 is now citation 1.
