You have a database from a very old version of Zotero on your computer. While upgrading from any previous version should work in theory, upgrading from very old versions may not work.

Assuming you don't actually have data you care about in that old database, you can just delete your Zotero data directory with Firefox closed and start again.
  • Actually I was never able to install zotero to begin with. It has given me a database error from the first time I tried to install it on this vista box back before Zotero 2.0. I can not delete the old database because I don't think it exists. I can't launch Zotero at all. If I'm mistaken and it somehow created a corrupt database do you know where in Vista it would be stored and what the file name would be? Thanks for your help.

Well, it does, because Zotero 2.0 is trying to upgrade it.

I linked to the Zotero Data page above, which explains how to find your data directory.

Let me back up with a little history. When I first got this computer I think it was before the Zotero 2.0 Release. I attempted to load the older version of Zotero which did not work with Vista. When the beta version of 2.0 came out I tried to upgrade. That's when I first got that database error message. As of right now I can not even start Zotero so I can't navigate to the show database tab that way nor can I find anything remotely close to:

    C:\Users\<User Name>\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\<randomstring>\zotero

There is no directory under my user name <knoerl> or any string remotely like this suggests. A search across the whole computer finds nothing with "zotero" in it yet the little zotero icon shows up on Firefox when I start that up. If I click on it, it crashes. It may be trying to find that database but it can't find it at all.

  • Any thoughts Dan?
  • You might need to set Explorer to show hidden files.

You may still be able to locate your data directory via the Zotero prefs even if you can't open Zotero: Go to Tools -> Add-ons -> Extensions -> Zotero -> Options/Preferences -> Advanced and click Show Data Directory if possible.
  • Dan:

That seems to have done the trick. Thanks for your help!
