Upgrade Storagecitations in word don't have the gray shade anymore and don't show up in the reference page

I found out that the citations in my document are not updating on the reference page. On an effort to fix it, I managed to remove the gray shade of all the citations. I clicked unlink citations a few times thinking it will fix it but nothing happens; however, if I insert the same citation again with add/edit citation it will turn gray but still doesn't show on the reference page. Can you please help me?

If the references weren't showing up before that, though, you or someone else might have just saved the document in the wrong format, breaking all citations.
