sort by date does not work

I have a publication date (newspaper) as dd.mm.yyyy which is shown as dd-mm-yyyy - so far ok. BUT: sometimes it takes the dd as mm and then the chronological sorting is wrong, i.e. it transforms 07.04.1873 (april seven, 1873) into 04.07.1873 (july four, 1873). I can change, ie. overwrite my data but nothing changes. In the singular entry everything is ok but I cannot create a chronological list.
Any indications how to solve that problem?
Thanks in advance
  • Which language Zotero interface are you using?
  • I'm working with the online version zotero.org in firefox (windows 11). Does that answer your question?
  • And I‘m using the Journal Article form …
  • The online version assumes US-style dates (MM-DD-YYYY) unless it's obvious that's not what you mean (e.g. 17-04-2020 or 2022-17-04). The desktop version localizes expected date formats.
  • Is it possible to change that assumption? The PC should "know" where I am and that's in Europe ...
  • Not possible, no. It would theoretically be, but localizing the web library would be a pretty major undertaking. I don't think it's a priority. Serious work in Zotero requires the app

Web Library should use browser locale setting and interpret ambiguous date input accordingly, but currently does not. We have an issue open for this and will improve this behavior in a future version.

As a temporary workaround, entering date in ISO format (eg. 2023-01-03 for today) helps avoid ambiguity.
  • Thanks for the comments. I work now with the app not online and it works. However, once solved in the online version would be nice.
