Encoding in PDF reader

I cannot read some pdf files in Zotero PDF reader (all are coming from one source: https://ceur-ws.org/Vol-3290/).
I can highlight the text and the text is correctly recognized when I make annotations. Here is a screenshot: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1S93CawbFKrLtY97Bp5nude7I4cVr-tSV/view?usp=sharing

I can open and read these pdf files in any other pdf reader and they look fine. It seems that something is happening with encoding, but I don't know how to fix it.
I would appreciate any help. Thanks!
  • 1) Which PDF specifically has the issue? I tried a few of them and they don't seem to have the encoding issue.
    2) Which operating system do you use?
  • 1) I had an issue with "Introducing Functional Diversity: A Novel Approach to Lexical Diversity in (Historical) Corpora" but then I tried other ones and I had the same problem with each one I tested.

    2)
    Edition Windows 11 Pro
    Version 22H2
    Installed on ‎21.‎09.‎2022
    OS build 22621.963
Experience Windows Feature Experience Pack 1000.22638.1000.0

    I have Zotero 6.0.18

PDF looks fine when I open it with Adobe Acrobat DC or in a browser built-in pdf reader (Chrome).
  • Ok, I can reproduce the issue on Windows 11. I guess the PDF file doesn't have fonts embedded, and falling back to default fonts fails on the current Zotero version. Most likely this will be fixed in Zotero 7.
