[Zotero Portable] Pdf reader not displaying all the pages of a single file / Annotations vanished

edited December 13, 2022
Hi everyone,

I'm currently reading and annotating a pdf with 12,214 pages. The problem is Zotero only shows up until page 9,906 and the file ends abruptly there.

If I open it externally, everything works well and every page is exhibited, and I can open and annotate each one of them, so this is not a problem with file corruption, it's specifically from Zotero.

I've added today a file with 9,887 pages and Zotero can only show until page 9,132.

Is this common? I'm using Zotero Portable in the portable apps framework, by the way.

I've set it up in an external SSD with my library, which I add as file links.

On a side note, I also had two pages' worth of annotations vanishing from it two days ago. The ones I've added since then (on the same pages I had before) are sticking for now, but I'm weary this might happen again.

From what I've read, Zotero should save all the annotations in the SQLite file, right?

Please, let me know if I can do something about the first problem.

Thank you in advance.
  • Additional note: I've added today a file with 9887 pages and Zotero can only show until page 9132.
  • 1) Can you see all pages if you drop your PDF file into PDF.js online viewer?
    2) How big is the file?
  • Hi @martynas_b,

Thank you for your interest and follow-up.

Today, after successfully opening the full 9,887-page pdf (254 Mb) in the link to the online viewer you said, I opened Zotero and it's now showing the full file. Sadly, I didn't try to open it in Zotero previous to testing your link. In any case, as of now, I am able to fully use the file.

Yesterday it just wasn't possible, even after dismounting my external SSD, reconnecting and reopening Zotero.

EDIT: I then proceeded to try to open the 12,214-page pdf (138 Mb). It wasn't working on this one, but after I closed and reopened it, it is now working for the first time as well. I don't understand what might be causing this. This also was exhibited correctly in your link.

If this happens again, I'll update it here.
