Full reference is getting inserted in the text

Hello! I am working in a Word document that I inherited from another user at my organization, and I am having an issue with using Zotero. When I try to add a citation in the text (by navigating to the Zotero tab of Word, and clicking "Add/Edit Citation"), the entire reference gets added directly there within the text instead of a superscript number. I can't figure out how to change this without starting a new word document and copying / pasting everything over and then redoing the citations from scratch (although not even sure if that will work either, if this is a formatting issue in Word?). Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
  • Which citation style? How does the citaiton look specifically?
  • I'm using Lancet style. The citation within the text is supposed to look like this: "...SEER^1", but instead it looks like: "...SEER Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) Program (Www.Seer.Cancer.Gov) SEER*Stat Database: Incidence - SEER 18 Regs Research Data + Hurricane Katrina Impacted Louisiana Cases, Nov 2012 Sub (1973-2010 Varying) - Linked To County Attributes - Total U.S., 1969-2011 Counties, National Cancer Institute, DCCPS, Surveillance Research Program, Surveillance Systems Branch, Released April 2013, Based on the November 2012 Submission."

The above reference should not be showing up within the text itself but rather in a references section when I generate the bibliography.

    Thanks!
  • Could you be inserting a note rather than a citation? Does this happen for every citation in the document?

What happens if you change to a completely different citation style, e.g. APA?
  • Also, just to be sure -- you have the citation style set under "Set Document Preferences" in the Word (or LibreOffice/Google Docs) add-on, not in Zotero itself, right?
  • AH I think that was the issue!! I used to be able to insert notes as citations but it seems perhaps with the recent Zotero update this is no longer possible. So far it seems that inserting citations that were not saved originally as notes in Zotero resolves this issue - I'm now seeing number superscripts in the text.

Thank you so much for your help! I'll circle back here if I run into any other issues.
  • That's right -- how Zotero handles Notes in citations has changed.
The citations never really worked (they were only the first ~100 characters of a note). Instead, the note now is inserted as a whole, including any citations _inside_ the note, allowing you to draft entire sections inside Zotero notes, using excerpted annotations from PDFs etc. It does old documents in the way you're seeing, though.
