Issues using Microsoft Word/Zotero

edited November 14, 2022
Hello,

I've been having issues with using Zotero in Word. This is the error I get:

"Zotero Integration Error:

Zotero experienced an error updating your document.

Would you like to view troubleshooting instructions?"

I believe this is a common problem and I've looked at the troubleshooting. I did steps 1-4 with no success.

When I copy and paste into a new document, sometimes it works again and then stops working after awhile. Sometimes it doesn't help at all. If I open a new document, it does work until I save the document. After saving, same error. Doesn't matter if I save it on my desktop hard drive or OneDrive, still get the same error.

I am unable to try step 8 since it won't even let me change document preferences.

Tried deleting half the document, then the other half. Still got the error both times.

Have the Report ID below and will also send email with document as requested in the troubleshooting steps.

Apologize as I don't think I'm properly doing all the troubleshooting steps. I've been encountering this error a lot in my use of Zotero with Word the past few months, but I was able to solve it before. For some reason this time, I'm unable to stop getting the error. Would appreciate the assistance to figure out what I'm doing wrong. Thank you so much.

I'm not seeing any problem in the document you sent — I'm able to insert a citation and insert a bibliography.
[JavaScript Error: "This command is not available because no document is open. [getDocument:y:\adomas\zotero\word-for-windows-integration\build\zoterowinwordintegration\document.cpp]"
Are you using OneDrive? Can you confirm that you've saved the file to your local disk, closed it, and reopened it from there, and that the problem persists after that? This is an error we would expect to see for a file saved to OneDrive.

If so, can you provide a Debug ID (different from a Report ID) for an operation that results in the error?
  • Hi,

I believe I've done everything requested. Document is saved to my desktop hard drive. Still get same error when I try to insert citation.

    D1725384650 is the Debug ID.

I have used One Drive - and I have been able to use Zotero with my documents on One Drive. But in this case I've been unable to use it in any place - one drive or hard drive.

    Thanks.

That document is still in OneDrive. Note that if you've set your desktop folder to be stored in OneDrive, saving the file to your desktop means saving the file to OneDrive.

(We've never reproduced the OneDrive problem, but it's a fairly common issue that people encounter. An alternative, as noted on the troubleshooting page, is to remove spaces from the filename.)
  • ok! Well that is frustrating, annoying and confusing!

I tried saving the file on an external hard drive - and yes it worked. Then I tried removing the spaces from the file name, and it worked.

For my own knowledge - that is all I can do to solve that particular issue? When you say you've not reproduced the One Drive problem - you mean you haven't been able to get the error on your end using One Drive?

    Thank you!

    Correct.
  • Interesting. Well, as long as I can function, that is good enough. Thank you so much.
