iOS: Disable file sync

This discussion was created from comments split from: Zotero iOS App on iPad: Storage and Sync.
  • Hi everyone, I have a question about this. I can't seem to deactivate Zotero file sync on the app. I can switch it to WebDAV without a specific link and it solves it (the sync ends up failing). Any better solution to this or expected update?

(Please start new threads for new issues. I've moved this to a new thread.)

Why would you want to deactivate it? The app defaults to downloading on demand, so it doesn't download anything unless you try to open something, at which point presumably you want to open it.

Or are you trying to prevent uploading?

The app is really meant to be used as a companion to the desktop app, so not syncing files that are saved doesn't make a lot of sense. But you can disable saving of files from the Saving section of the settings.
  • Apologies if not clear. Yes, prevent uploading. I am trying just to avoid overfilling the space on the web in order to need to upgrade to additional space and having to pay fees. I do most of my reading on my iPad anyway so sharing PDFs across all devices is not needed. Let me know if it makes sense
  • +1 for adding this as an option.

I have copyright-protected ebooks (e.g., from Springer) which I have legally obtained through my school’s library which I would like to be able to open in Zotero’s PDF reader (which is the best I have found for iPad) without worrying about their being uploaded somewhere.
  • @ntcarruth: 1) The iOS app is designed to sync with the online library, and you're meant to be able to delete and reinstall the app at any time without losing data. There's no way to turn off syncing, and there isn't going to be.

    2) Only you have access to your synced personal library. There's no problem adding files to it that can't be shared with others.
  • @dstillman I see, thank you for the explanation!

"There's no way to turn off syncing, and there isn't going to be."
That's really a pity... I also do most of my reading on my iPad and I don't need PDFs sharing across all devices.
