openoffice plugin: "Zotero experienced an error updating your document" - error ID 588192088

Hi,

I just installed the latest updates (zotero and open office plugin). When I try to insert a reference, firefox freezes and after a while I got this error message in Firefox. Nothing happens in Open office.

Any idea?
  • To give some more information:
I am using Open Office 2.4.1. on Ubuntu 8.04.
    And the error message is:

  • What operating system are you running? What Java plug-in is installed in about:plugins?
  • The operating system is Ubuntu 8.04. (with Open Office 2.4.1.) and the Java plug-in is the 1.6.0_16.
  • Hi Simon. I have installed the latest updates, I now have Zotero 2.0b7.2 + Zotero OppenOffice Integration 3.0a3. It still doesn't work. When trying to insert a footnote in a new document, nothing happens in OppenOffice, Firefox freezes but I don't get the message "Zotero experienced an error..." anymore.
In the Report erros feature, the error report is:

I don't know if it might be connected but when trying to update the Add-on Zotero OppenOffice Integration (in Tools->Add-ons->Extensions and click "Find Updates.") in OppenOffice, I got the message:
    "An error occured:
    Not found!"
    Thank you for your help!
  • We'll track down the cause of this, but you might want to consider upgrading to OpenOffice.org 3 if it all possible.
  • I have upgraded to OpenOffice 3. Zotero now works, I can insert new citations, edit them, insert a bibliography, etc.
    But I have two problems:
    1. When I try to edit some Zotero references (not those made the last days but some weeks ago), I get the message:
"your document must be permanently upgraded in order to work with Zotero 2.b07 or later. It is recommended that you make a backup before proceeding. Are you sure you want to continue?". I click yes and it says:
"Item # in this citation no longer exists in your Zotero database. Do you want to select a substitute item? Clicking "No" will delete the field codes for citations containing this item, preserving the citation text but deleting it from your bibliography." I click yes and I have to choose a new Zotero reference for each citation, one after the other. Is it normal?
    2. When copying Zotero references (those made with OppenOffice 2.4.1 but which I can edit - unlike those referred in the problem 1) and pasting them in a new document, they are grayed but Zotero doesn't recognizes them (if I ask to edit a footnote or insert a bibliography, it writes: "You must insert a citation before performing this operation".
    Thanks.
  • 1) It sounds like the items for these references have been deleted from your library. Did you export and re-import your library by any chance? We have yet to see this message appear erroneously, although it's possible.

    2) You need to click the "Set Document Preferences" button first.
  • 2. It works.
    1. Yes, I did export and import the library. I didn't know it would delete the items. Can something be done?
  • If you exported and imported the library, you'll need to select each reference individually. You should only get the message once per reference (not once per citation), so this shouldn't be too difficult unless you have a very large reference list. Alternatively, if you have a copy of your Zotero data directory from before you exported and imported the library, you can restore this backup (although you'll lose any new items you added to your library since you made the backup).
  • I prefer to have to update the old references than to lose the new items, so the first option is more secure. Thank you very much for your help and despite the technical problems, Zotero is very useful!
