File Provider 'upgrade' for Google Drive on Mac breaks Zotero

I have been using Zotero with Google Drive cloud storage on both PC and Mac for years. The have been a few bumps along the way, but I have always found a way to resolve the issue.

I am unable to tell if the latest bump is major or minor.

My Mac 'upgraded' its handling of streaming file services on an update to OS 12.1

see post here - https://support.google.com/drive/answer/12178485?visit_id=638007160596964449-607419820&p=file_provider&rd=1#fileprovider&zippy=,where-do-i-find-my-streaming-files-now

After initial problems, I thought I got Zotero working with my library folder. However, that solution worked for one open-close cycle. Zotero now consistently crashes on opening and I get the error:
----
"Could not open connection to /Users/xxx/Library/CloudStorage/GoogleDrive-yyy/[Library folder location within Google Drive] : 2153971714 openConnection/</<@resource://gre/modules/Sqlite.jsm:945:21

From previous event:

Zotero.DBCconnection.prototype._getConnectionAsync@chrom://zotero/content/xpcom/ds.js:1191:30"
----
Can anyone explain and help me resolve the issue??

My next step while waiting is to see if I can turn off File Provider on Mac, which may remove the problematic drive path (my guess on problem).

  • You absolutely cannot store your Zotero database in cloud storage. We've always warned against this, and Zotero itself will show a warning at startup if it detects that your data directory is in a cloud storage folder.

  • Thank you dstillman! Fully understand that, but have been doing so for years. I am not looking for Zotero to remedy or support the option. My library is still fully intact. I am just after folks that may also be using Zotero in this not supported and not recommended way, and that may be facing (and may have solved) a similar issue.

UPDATE: didn't enact planned fix yet, but did clear out lots of old GD clutter in the Zotero library folder, and it started working again... for this open/close cycle at least.
  • As Dan said, storing your Zotero database in a cloud synced folder will 100% cause corruption and data loss eventually. You should move your database out of there right away.
  • Thank you bwiernik! Agreed.
