Citation edit - how to add smallcaps to name only (not surname) ?
Hello guys,
I'm working with the McGill citation style for my PhD and I'm edditing it because there are some erros in the last update (extra space ect) but I would also enjoy to add smallcaps for the name only.
I tried to do it directly throught Notepad following the guide but the main issue is that I don't know how to apply a different font for the name and surname. I'd like to keep the surname with a normal font, and add smalcapps for the name, but when I try to edit it, the smallcaps apply for everything and I cannot found any distinction betwenn name and surname.
Do you think is it even possilbe or I have to apply the same font to the name and surname ?
Thanks for your help!

2. Can you specify the errors you found? We'd like to fix it it for all of your colleagues.
3. Small caps:
You'd modify it for example like this to achieve small caps for the family name (the 5th line was added):
<macro name="contributors-short">
<group delimiter=" ">
<names variable="author">
<name form="short" and="symbol">
<name-part name="family" font-variant="small-caps"/>
</name>
<substitute>
<names variable="editor"/>
<names variable="translator"/>
</substitute>
</names>
<text macro="recipient-short"/>
</group>
</macro>
Editing styles, general instructions: https://www.zotero.org/support/dev/citation_styles/style_editing_step-by-step
For the McGill, I tried the french and the english version :
- Manuel canadien de la référence juridique 9e édition (01/01/2022)
- Canadian Guide to Uniform Legal Citation 9th edition (01/01/2022)
Now, I'm on the french version, and I don't have a precise list (I'm still checking everything) but for exemple :
- For many documents, the words "by" is still used whereas its must be normally in french, so I changed it by "par" ;
- I also saw a lot of extra space after the date for some document (mostly report) / which is not present in the english version
I'll comment if I see others little issues like this
For the other issue, you'd need to be more specific.
https://raw.githubusercontent.com/citation-style-language/styles/9f6e10b4624e3ed56110ab5aed9fdb48e5eea448/mcgill-fr.csl
Concerning the other little issue, its a space issue after a comma at the end of the citation. I saw it for two type of documents:
- Rapport (Report)
- Proposition de loi (law project)
Exemple of the problem for the Report, this is my citation :
Falling short? Why environmental and climate-related disclosures under the EU Non-Financial Reporting Directive must improve, par CLIMATE DISCLOSURE STANDARDS BOARD, 2020 , en ligne : .
There is an extra space between the "2020" and the "," before "en ligne"
Also, the reason may be link by the fact that I fill the "extra" blank in zotero in order to put :
en ligne : .
Because sometimes I want to put the link of the document. So the issue may be due to the "date" or to the "extra"
Can you check if any of the other item types were now affected by this?

Thanks for your help - it will be very useful for many of us.
Last really little detail in order to be perfect :
- Concerning the "Thesis", here my citation
Ana-Maria ILCHEVA, L’entreprise à l’épreuve du changement climatique : obligations et responsabilités Université Côte d’Azur, 2020) [unpublished].
I realized that the "(" was missing, in order to fix this, I filled the blank "Type" and i added Law Thesis in french. I don't know if its normal or not, so the citation became :
Ana-Maria ILCHEVA, L’entreprise à l’épreuve du changement climatique : obligations et responsabilités (Thèse de droit, Université Côte d’Azur, 2020) [unpublished].
You might also change the word "unpublished" here :
"unpublished" should be changed by "non publiée" in french according to my McGill guide (8th version / paper version).
I don't have access to the guidelines, but I think that's correct as shown. Please confirm that via the guidelines since you have access to them.
But I wouldn't use the word "fix" in your case. You only entered the metadata correctly so the style can do its work. ;)
"unpublished":
fixed. (note, the style is in the 9th version, but I assume this hasn't changed from 8th to 9th)

And so sorry, I feel so annoying but I saw two more errors :
- Stefen AYKUT, Conférences climat : « Les COP ne peuvent pas être à l’avant-garde des débats, elles ne sont qu’une chambre d’enregistrement » , 2021.
There is an extra space after the title and the coma before the date
This document is an interview, I checked what I entered in Zotero and everything seems fine.
- Michal NACHMANY et al, Global trends in climate change legislation and litigation , Koninklijke Brill NV, 2017 à la p 4.
There is also an extra space after the title and the coma."Koninklijke Brill NV" is the Institution, and the document is a Report.

Problem n°1 :
Footnote
Item type: Interview
Current output: Surname Name, Title , Date
Wanted output: Surname Name, Title, Date
Issue : extra space
Problem n°2 :
Footnote
Item type: Report
Current output: Surname Name, Title , Editor, Date

Issue : extra space

Unfortunately, it is not working. Still have problem n°1 and n°2.
The rest of the footnotes are perfect.
I can not replicate your issues and your citation actually looks off. A report would NOT have the author names at the beginning. Report also doesn't have the "Editor" field per default.
Example report footnote:
Report über Verkehrsangelegenheiten, National Report, par Hubert Goisern, National Report, Berlin, BMU, 2019.
- I said "editor" but it was my mistake sorry, I wanted to say "Institution" ;
- And I usually put the authors name at the beginning AND the Institution's name, it is also possible to do with Zotero but the issue is really after the report's name.
Problem n°2 :
Footnote
Item type: Report
Current output: Surname Name, Title , Institution, Date
Wanted output: Surname Name, Title, Institution, Date
Issue : extra space
Example report footnote:
Michal Nachmany et al, Global trends in climate change legislation and litigation , Koninklijke Brill NV, 2017.
Wanted output : Michal Nachmany et al, Global trends in climate change legislation and litigation, par Koninklijke Brill NV, 2017.
I tried to fill some information in the different fields on Zotero, and I have for exemple this result :
Exemple report footnote :
Michal Nachmany et al, Global trends in climate change legislation and litigation , Test, Koninklijke Brill NV, 2017.
So the extraspace is definitly in the report's title. Moreover, I don't have the "par" anymore.
If you use the style I provided above you get the following for a FOOTNOTE:
Global trends in climate change legislation and litigation, par Michael Nachmany, Koninklijke Brill NV, 2017.
Please note again, as it is a report it will start with the title and NOT the authors.
I tried many times to delete my old code and add the one you gave me and I still have the same issue.
Thanks !
Ps : I do not have the issue when I'm doing a bibliography.
Anyway, I guess I'll edit manually, I'll check again the instruction in order to edit the citation, but thanks a lot for you help and sorry for the all the time you spent there
I have the most important issue fixed so thanks a lot
If it's really entered as item type "report" it should NOT give author names in the beginning.
Only if it's something else it could come out like the way you showed.

First picture shows the entry ; the second picture shows the result in word with 2 different footnote.
In my entry (first picture), the problem was the text in the "Extra". I never added that by myself, it was autoregistered. That was the cause of my problem.
In the second picture, you can see the difference :
- Footnote n°1 is the document when I deleted the entry ;
- Footnote n°2 is the document when the Extra was filled with "Type: dataset..."
Anyway, so its working perfectly, thanks again for your patience
I noticed a last error.
Footnote
Item type: Chapter
Current output: Surname Name, Chapter Title, in Book title Collection, Place, Edition, Date
Wanted output: Surname Name, Chapter Title, in Book title, Collection, Place, Edition, Date
Issue : no coma between Book title and Collection
Example (see also picture if needed) :
Geoffrey SAMUEL, « Dépasser le fonctionnalisme » dans Comparer les droits, résolument Les voies du droit, Paris, Presses universitaires de France, 2009

https://ibb.co/1KfRxy2
I also did a test of the footnote :
Footnote n°1 : citation as a book
Footnote n°2 : citation as a chapter in the same book
You can see the difference which is not logic :
https://ibb.co/996sVBH
ps : the red is the book's title so its easier to identify
