Citations are not updating, on Mac, Google drive, MS Word

I have a MS Word file on google drive (also synced to local drive) with citations. When i returned to the file and start editing, all my previous citations are in red and when I click it goes to my chrome browser.

"//Zotero and Google Docs
You likely ended up here by clicking on a citation created by Zotero in a Google Doc.

To safely edit the document, you should install the Zotero Connector for your browser.//""

When I add a new citation it starts with new numbering and previous numbers are not updated accordingly.

Im on a Mac running Catalina, MS Word (16), updated Zotero (6.0.13) and Zotero connector is installed.

What should I do?
  • Are you saying you're trying to edit a Word doc in Google Docs? Because that won't work (and Zotero should prevent you from trying).

See Moving Document Between Word Processors if that's what you want to do.
  • I was not trying to edit it as a Google Doc, I only had it in one of my local hard drive folders synced with the Google drive.
After a couple of days when I try to edit it on MS word, the above error occurs. New citations I add have started numbering from 1 (IEEE citation) and old citations are now in red and do not sync (renumbered accordingly)
  • If you have red (unlinked) citations that take you to the page you quote above, you absolutely edited it in Google Docs at some point, which unlinked all the citations. Those links aren't created by the Word plugin, only the Google Docs plugin. You'll need to restore from a backup or reinsert those citations.
  • Hmm... I'm sure I never opened it as a google doc. Anyway, I'll be careful to convert before I ever move into a different word processor.
    Thank you.
