Zotero not properly importing citations with quotation marks in title

Hello,

I am working on a project to compile faculty publications for our law professors from Hein Online. I have been Batch importing directly from the authors' profile pages in Hein, which has generally been working fine. However, I just realized a major issue, Zotero does not seem to know what to do with quotation marks in titles. I have noticed that the imported titles were sometimes being cut off. For example, the title:

Dismantling "Dilemmas of Difference" in the Workplace

Would appear in Zotero as:

Dismantling

More troubling is that if the article title begins with a quotation mark, the citation is not imported at all.

Is there any workaround for this? Apologies if I am missing something obvious. The Hein pages are behind authentication so I'm not sure how to provide more information.

Thanks!
  • Saving that item from HeinOnline using the Zotero Connector works fine for me. Can you explain the exact steps you're taking?
  • Hello, thank you for your response. I am using the Firefox extension for this. My process has been:

    - Visit an author profile page in Hein Online.
    - Click the Zotero connector button, which brings up a separate window allowing me to select which of the citations on the page I want to import.

I've been noticing that the list that appears in the pop-up window has often been a few items shorter than the actual list on the page (and I am aware that the numbers are off because the pop-up window starts at zero for some reason). I've investigated this some more by comparing the lists, and found that Zotero is ignoring citations for a few different reasons:

    - The title of the work begins with a quotation mark. As I mentioned in my original post, if there is a quotation mark within the title text, the imported citation cuts off the title before the quotation mark.
    - The work is shown in a grey box, which seems to indicate that it is contained in a collection we may not have access to (e.g. bar journals)
    - The work is listed weirdly on Hein in a way that is missing certain pieces of metadata.

I've mostly been able to get around these issues manually so far, but it is making my project take longer, so I was hoping there was a workaround or a possible fix for this. Let me know if you need more information.

    Thanks,

    Ben
  • Hein Online author profile pages are just not supported currently -- if you click through to the article or import from regular search results (e.g. by searching by the author name), they'll import correctly
  • Ok thanks for the response. Generally the imports have been working well on the profile pages, which is why I thought this was a weird bug. Clicking through to articles is much too time consuming, as Hein's response time has been very slow, and search results are very inconsistent for finding all works by a single author without duplications.

I understand each kind of page creates new challenges, just thought I would ask about this. I appreciate the help!
  • We'll look at supporting profile pages, but no idea when that'll happen. Ticket is here: https://github.com/zotero/translators/issues/2865

(and goodness, I hear you on Hein being laggy...)
  • @Uncola Author Profiles on HeinOnline are now supported.
