I'm a student in history and just adding my voice to those asking for this feature in Zotero. I'm curious to know if there's any progress here. Thanks for all your help!
I use Citavi and have looked to see if I could switch to Zotero and the lack of a category for archival materials would prevent that. When will this function be integrated?
No change from last March and generally no ETA on Zotero features, though as per the beginning of this thread, a lot of archival _materials_ can be added. It's specifically citing collections that isn't.
Does this mean that one must manually type various fields into the single "extra" field? Can each one can be automatically cited if entered this way? CSL Variable: Value
As various threads have mentioned, it's a major drawback to not have separate fields for archive name, fond, subcollection, document number, etc. Or even a single field called "signature."
I guess this is the difference between a bibliography tool and a note-taking/archival/research notes tool.
Yeah, just enter each variable on a separate line and citation styles will pick it up with it's meant to be rendered. E.g.: publisher: Penguin publisher-location: Narnia genre: thesis
For archives, in CSL we now have these for variables, which I think should be sufficient to capture most standard ways of citing materials: archive Archive storing the item archive_collection Collection the item is part of within an archive archive_location Storage location within an archive (e.g. a box and folder number) archive-place Geographic location of the archive
archive_location (which is already available in Zotero as "Loc. in Archive) would be what you'd use for a signature. We're never going to capture every level of the archival hierarchy (like subcollection, box, folio) -- that's indeed something that you could do in a dedicated archival tool like tropy, but would get overwhelming in a general purpose tool like Zotero.

though they're currently not in any citation style.
No ETA when Zotero is going to update the item types and field accordingly.
I'd like some helping understanding the information here:
