In my usual workflow I copy citations with cmd+shift+c and paste to, say, overleaf. But this adds some unnecessary fields like abstract and even "file" which is just the location of the pdf on my laptop. Is there a way to customize it so that only some fields are copied?

dstillmanSee the Better BibTeX plugin. That's what you'll want to use when using a BibTeX-based workflow. The default BibTeX exporter is just for basic metadata exchange.
