Exposing Zotero UI on MacOS

edited August 1, 2022
Recently, there has been some exciting application development where apps such as Wooshy, Homerow, and Shortcat let a user access the UI through the keyboard. I have tried all three in Zotero and it appears not all elements are accessible to those apps.

Created a [Github issue](https://github.com/zotero/zotero/issues/2733) to describe the issue with the help of screenshots.

I am also not able to post on the developers mailing list.

It should work as well as it works in Firefox 60 ESR. Firefox 60 didn't support VoiceOver very well, so to the extent that the apps rely on the same macOS accessibility APIs, they might not work that well with the current version.

If it works better in Firefox 102 ESR, it will work better in Zotero 7 later this year.
  • Thanks.

Yes, all the elements are accessible in Firefox (tried 91.12.0 ESR). Fingers crossed for Zotero 7.

Firefox version actually probably doesn't matter much — Wooshy works pretty similarly in Firefox 60 and Firefox 102. But it doesn't find everything in either — e.g., it can't find entries in the bookmarks manager. Similarly (and for probably the same reason), it doesn't work at all with the folder and message lists in Thunderbird. Those trees in Firefox and Thunderbird are the elements the collection and item trees in Zotero are closest to on a technical level.

We'll see what we can do.
