Zotero does not open under Mac OS Montery

When I open Zotero, I get the following error message:

[Exception... "Component returned failure code: 0x80520006 (NS_ERROR_FILE_TARGET_DOES_NOT_EXIST) [nsIFile.create]" nsresult: "0x80520006 (NS_ERROR_FILE_TARGET_DOES_NOT_EXIST)" location: "JS frame :: chrome://zotero/content/xpcom/ipc.js :: Zotero.IPC</this.init :: line 36" data: no]
Zotero.IPC</this.init@chrome://zotero/content/xpcom/ipc.js:36:9
this.init<@chrome://zotero/content/xpcom/zotero.js:372:7
From previous event:
ZoteroService@file:///Applications/Zotero.app/Contents/Resources/components/zotero-service.js:346:7
@chrome://zotero/content/include.js:4:14

I can either quit the application or check for updates.

I'm running Zotero 6.0.11 on a MBP M1 (2021) with OSX 12.4. I've tried to delete and re-install but without success. I've also deleted the browser plugins without a change.

Any idea?

Many thanks and greetings from Berlin

  • Is your Zotero data directory in the default location, or have you moved it elsewhere? Were you using Zotero on this computer previously? If so, what happened between then and now?

    Many thanks for your quick reply. I have indeed moved the Zotero data directory to my local Nextcloud folder to have an automated backup. Due to a problem I was facing with the cloud last week, I had to switch folders. So, what I understand is, that I have "crashed" the path to the Zotero data directory!?! Is there any way I can change the path manually? I would also be happy to simply reset Zotero and start from scratch.

    You can't store your data directory in a cloud storage folder.

    You should move it back to your local disk. If you want to have a backup, use backup software — don't store an active database in a cloud storage folder.

    Thank you for your support. I have moved the folder back and everything is working again... :)

    Have a great day!
