Citations won't update when moving from Word to Google

Hi all,

Trying to move a Word doc into Google docs without breaking the citations for the final leg of a project. Following the steps here for Word to Google Docs: https://www.zotero.org/support/kb/moving_documents_between_word_processors#:~:text=Word to Google Docs&text=Click Document Preferences in the,Doc to upload the file.

Save a copy, set it up to work with a different processor, open it through another doc in Google docs - but when I hit 'Refresh', the last step, I get the error message:

"You must insert a citation before performing this operation."

And the citations remain in code format.

Does anyone know why? Adding a citation first doesn't work either.
  • If you opened the correct document in Google Docs, the first line should read "ZOTERO_TRANSFER_DOCUMENT" before you hit "Refresh" in the Zotero menu. If it does not, you either didn't convert it properly in Word, or loaded the wrong file in Google Docs.
  • HI,

Same for me, I followed the steps and when my document is added in Google Docs I have the first line you cite.
But when I try to refresh, I get the same error message.
    What can I do ?
    Thanks for your answers.
  • Does it happen if you create a new sample document with a few Zotero citations, then export it and try to open in Google Docs?
