Loss of PDF attachments after computer failure!

Hello - hoping you can help! Any advice would be very welcome please!

I use Zotero with Google drive on my Mac, and also have Zotfiles to manage naming and sending going to and from my iPad.

Like a fooool I hadn't made a back up of Zotero and I went and fried my logic board/daughter board (and more) with an electrical glitch. This has now all been repaired.

I have re-downloaded Zotero and Zotfiles. My library contents/notes/tags have resynced in the app and also online - but none of the files are attached. Some have completely gone missing within Gdrive, some are still there.

As I try different to open different PDF files within Zotero I get different error messages:

"The attached file could not be found. It may have been moved or deleted outside of Zotero, or a Linked Attachment Base Directory may be set incorrectly on one of your computers."
or
"The attached file could not be found at the following path:/Users/cathysoreny/My Drive/Zotero storage/storage/AA4V4MM9/0380001.pdf It may have been moved or deleted outside of Zotero, or, if the file was added on another computer, it may not yet have been synced to zotero.org."

With my preferences there is nothing at all set under 'Linked Attachment Base Directory' but my data directory location is set to custom and my G Drive folder.

Reading round it seems Gdrive is not very stable, and I am happy concede I may need to go for the upgrade within Zotero. And do a full back up...

But is there a simple way to do this and reconnect/move over? I have 365 items here and I'm mid PhD upgrade report, draft due in later this week!!!

Huge thanks for any help!
  • We can only provide support for using stored files, where Zotero manages everything for you and it pretty much just works, including built-in syncing with the official Zotero iPad app. So I'm afraid you're mostly on your own here unless and until you switch to that.

I'll just note a couple things:
    /Users/cathysoreny/My Drive/Zotero storage/storage/AA4V4MM9/0380001.pdf
You absolutely shouldn't keep your data directory in a cloud storage folder. You'll corrupt your database. So you should move the data directory back to the default location and point Zotero at it.

The Linked Attachment Base Directory setting needs to be set to whatever external folder you were storing linked files in via ZotFile. We wouldn't have any idea what that is, so it's not something we can help with.
