Feature Requests for Tagging / Number of Records within a Collection

I've been working with members at our institution who have begun using Zotero. They really like this application, but I've been asked to pass along a few feature requests for consideration in later versions.

First Request: Ability to add a global tag -- Our workers use multiple library systems to create their collections. Although they can identify the library each record came from through the repository field, they desire to create their own tag identifying the institution. They can currently do this one record at a time, but they'd prefer to either perform this task once on multiple records they've selected or on an entire collection before they merge it into a larger collection.

Second Request: See number of records within a collection -- After collections have been created, it's difficult to tell at a glance how many records are contained within each collection. Some of our workers add entries to a collection from a known list of X number of items. After they think they've added all the entries, there is no visible number for them to compare as a checksum. (A workaround we're using at present is to have them select all entries within an entered collection; they can then see how many items are selected in the rightmost column.) It would be nice to have the total number for each collection visible on the screen without having to select items or, at the very least, the ability to select a "get info" on each collection that could provide a numeric tally.

Thanks in advance for your consideration of these features. Zotero is already a great application, but these features certainly would be of use to our staff.
  • 1. Select all references you wish to tag & drag them onto a tag

I don't know how a "'get info' on a collection" function would be better than the current method of obtaining the number of items in a collection....
  • Noksagt, thanks for the tip on selecting and dragging onto a tag. I think that will address the need for applying a global tag on multiple records.

Regarding a "get info", it would probably just be a nicety for those who are keyboard/interface challanged. As I see it (at least from a Mac OS perspective), the user has two methods to select all entries within a collection. The quick way is to select the collection, select one entry within that collection, then choose "Select All" from Firefox's "Edit" menu and read the number of items selected in the rightmost column. A more involved way (and possibly more prone to error) is to select the collection, select the first entry within that collection, scroll to the bottom, hold the shift key down, select the last entry and then read the number of items selected in the rightmost column.

If a number appeared just after the name of each library indicating the number of items within, that would involve no keystrokes whatsoever. If there were a visible symbol to click on for each collection or a keyboard command that could be used when a collection was selected that would involve no more than one or two steps to reach desired information.

Again, this feature is probably not critical, as there are workarounds. Still, it might be useful for some of the user population.
  • Cmd+a does select all on a Mac, though, right?
click on collection - click on any item in the center panel - cmd+a (ctrl+a on lin/win).
  • Yes, cmd+a does "select all" on a Mac. However, depending on the user, many find it just as easy to choose the "Select All" command from the "Edit" drop-down menu. Still, I guess this could be counted as a third way and slightly quicker than what I posted earlier. :-)
