Always renames attachments despite settings in Preferences

1108797002

Whenever I attach a PDF file to a citation Zotero renames that PDF file to match the citation, even though I have that option unchecked in [Preferences > General > File Handling > Automatically rename attachment files using parent metadata]

I did have that option checked in the past, but unchecking it does not change the behavior.
  • Can you provide a Debug ID for this happening?

How are you attaching the file?
  • Debug ID: 1108797002

I was dragging the PDF file from a Finder window and dropping it onto the citation.
  • That's a Report ID, not a Debug ID. See my link.
  • Ah, okay. Here is the Debug ID for dragging and dropping: D1466823749

FYI, I also tried attaching the file using "Add Attachment" on the toolbar (not captured during that Debug session) with the item expanded. I saw the PDF attached to the item in the GUI and then the PDF was renamed. I then tried to add the same PDF a second time with the item closed but selected in the GUI. After doing that and expanding the item in the GUI, the 2nd PDF was NOT renamed. I was then able to delete the first PDF to get to the desired outcome, but I don't know if that happened because it was a 2nd PDF attachment or because the item was closed in the GUI.
  • After more experiments I see that the 2nd attached PDF file is never renamed regardless of the state of the item in the GUI.
  • Does it happen with ZotFile disabled?
  • Okay then... I didn't know what ZotFile was until a minute ago, but I see that it has a separate set of file rename settings that must work independently of the main setting, and it was set to rename unless there is another attachment present.
  • To be clear, ZotFile is a plugin. It's something you installed.
  • Indeed. Thanks for the hint.
