Zotero 2.0b6.5 does not recognize old citations in OpenOffice (extension 2.0a3)

When in OpenOffice 3.1 -and using Zotero 2.0b6.5- I try to edit any citation made with 2.0b6.4 or older:
1) I get the message "This item no longer exist in your Zotero Database..." (while it does exist so as I can see in the Zotero's Firefox window, and even introduce the same item in a new citation)
2) If I then try to edit any other old citation, I get the message "Syntax error: syntax error".

I did not had any problem with 2.0b6.4 and the same extension 2.0a3.
Error report ID: 1719123938

Many thanks for any help.
  • Could you send a document excerpt that exhibits this problem to support@zot....org, with a link to this thread? Thanks.
  • Hi, Dan,
thank you very much for your quick answer. In relation to your question: excerpts of the document don't show the problem. The problem happens only when the number of citations lays above 120-130.
    1) My document in its present state has around 300 citations (in footnotes). When I make a small excerpt, Zotero offers no problem with the edition of citations. I tried different samples: excerpts with 3 citations, then 5, 10, etc. There were no problems. Only once it asked me if I wanted to permanently upgrade the excerpt document (which I did and then there was no problem further), but in general it presented me directly with the edition window.
    2) As I said, the problems began with excerpt documents of around 120-130 citations (around half document).
    3) I have repeated steps 1 and 2 for different portions of the original document (begin, middel, and end of the set of citations). The results are always similar: the problems only begin around 120-130 citations.
  • Hi,
    1) Zotero 2.0b7 and the plugin 3.0a1 for Openoffice continue to reproduce the prolems when editing my old documents (worked with z previous to 2.0b65).
I have made an extract of the documents and a copy of the error message from Zotero in Openoffice. I would be grateful if you could take a look at them. If this is possible, how could I send you these two files?
    Additional information:
I found that the problems are caused at least in part by some headings and (I think) not by the Zotero citations (in the openoffice file that I would send you, you could see above the hyphened line two of the headings making problems). When I delete those two headings, Zotero 2.b07 works without problems.
The curious thing is that versions of Zotero previous to 2.0b65 did not had any problem with the same (3.1.1 and previous) OpenOffice files.
  • You can send the files to support@zot....org, with a link to this thread.

Are you saying that, if you remove the headings, you don't receive the "This item no longer exists" message, and with the headings you do?
  • Thanks for your answer. I just sent an email with the attached files.

Yes. If I remove the headings, I don't receive the "This item no longer exists" message, and with these headings I do (sometimes I get that message, sometimes I get another error message: the one I am ttaching to my email).
With the problematic headings I cannot insert any citation even if there are no previous citations or any other text, but only the headings.
In the Openoffice file I have sent, I have replicated (not copied) the same two headings beneath the hyphened line. These two headings (contrary to the ones above the line) do not make any problem.
  • Hi,
    1) Firefox extension 3.0a2 for word processing integration is working well with Zotero 2.0b7.1 in Openoffice Windows XP, but not inOpenoffice Ubuntu 9.04.
    2) Openoffice Windows XP does not show the problemes above mentioned any longuer. I can now edit again the old files and the headings make no problem (the editing window does take a long time to appear for each citation).
    3) But, unfortunatley, in Openoffice Ubuntu 9.04 I get an error message: "Firefox could not load the component required to communicate with your word processor. Please ensure that the appropriate Firefox extension is installed, then try again." I suppose 2.07b.1 and 3.0a2 are the appropriate extensions, and they are installed in Firefox (3.0.14), and I can also see that in Openoffice 3.0a1 is installed (just as in Windows XP). Besides, the Zotero bar is visible in Openoffice.

I do not think I am making something wrong during the installation. It rather looks that 3.0a2 (which in Openoffice installs as 3.0a1) is not yet the appropriate extension for 2.0b7.1 in Ubuntu.
I am happy the problem is already solved in Windows. I hope this also happens for Ubuntu, especially since I have all my documents in this OS.
  • Androcles, you need sun-java6-plugin to use Zotero with OpenOffice in Ubuntu (and you may have to uninstall icedtea6-plugin). If you have these packages, what do you see in the pink rectangle when you go to this page?
  • Hi, Simon,
many thanks for your help. It solved my problem indeed by uninstalling the icedtea plugin and installing the sun-java6 plugin instead. I can now insert new citations and edit the old ones in the Openoffice files produced using previous versions of Openoffice and of Zotero's and Openoffice's plugins.
Again, many thanks to you and the Zotero team for your work and this wonderful program.
