Could you say a bit more? Are you saying the highlighting covers the text and you can't read it anymore? Is that true regardless of the color of the highlight? Or are you referring to something else?

perfect, yes. So the problem is the extracted text from the "Writing Measures" section that's mostly gibberish, right? Is that a PDF that open access/publicly available?

If you try to copy text, the result is the same with Preview.app, and I guess with all other PDF viewers.

The problem is that some fonts, in the PDF file, don't have a proper glyph to unicode character mapping.

The text is normal and readable in other aka Notability and others.

Can you provide a screenshot demonstrating that the same text is gibberish in Zotero but normal in Notability? I just checked and the gibberish text is just missing in Notability.

There are two potential solutions for that:
1) Try to open with the same program that produced the PDF file.
2) OCR the whole PDF file and regenerate text layer.

Unfortunately we can't help with any of these.
