in text citation problems - same first author, same year

Dear Zotero lovers,
I am a newbie in Zotero so I'm trying to figure out how it works.
So, I'm writing my dissertation and I have a bunch of papers/presentations from the same first author which were published in the same year. However, some of the authors from the publication/presentation differ. For example, I have:
Fernández, Martínez, Sánchez (2019)
Fernández, Martínez, Sánchez and Gómez (2019)
What I want in my in-text citations is that Zotero only recognizes the first author and includes Fernández et al. 2019a, 2019b. Instead, it recognizes it as two different set of authors and includes all the last names in the in-text citations.
I'm using APA 7th.
Has anyone encountered this situation? How have you dealt with it?
THANK YOU!
  • What you're seeing is correct APA style -- different author groups should not be collapsed to the same et al.
Zotero/CSL can do what you want, and if you want to disregard APA style and do that, we can tell you how to modify the style, but it would be incorrect APA.
  • Thank you, adamsmith. I posted this just before I finally found that it was correct in APA, so I don't have to do any change.
Many thanks for taking the time to reply!
  • Hi again,
I have an issue with this same year/same author thing. According to APA, as you said, different author groups are not collapsed into et al. but as far as I know, et al is used when you have more than one author afterwards, and this is not my case, that is, I have the following citation:

Gómez Carrero, Fernández Fuertes, & Martínez, 2019
Gómez Carrero, Fernández Fuertes, Martínez, et al., 2019a, 2019b

In the first reference, I only have 3 authors and the way Zotero is referencing it is correct. However, in the second reference, I have a total of 4 authors, the three that appear there plus another one. Apparently, I should used the four authors but Zotero is collapsing the last one into et al. How can I change this?
    Thanks in advance!
