Zotero integration Openoffice 7 crashes when trying to unlink citations

Hi there,

I have Openoffice 7.2.4.1 installed on Ubuntu 20.04 and using Zotero 5.0.96.3. The java version is:
openjdk version "11.0.13" 2021-10-19
OpenJDK Runtime Environment (build 11.0.13+8-Ubuntu-0ubuntu1.20.04)
OpenJDK 64-Bit Server VM (build 11.0.13+8-Ubuntu-0ubuntu1.20.04, mixed mode, sharing)

The integration works well to add citations, even for refreshing. But everytime I try to unlink citations, Openoffice isn't responding anymore and I have to kill it and Zotero and start over again, so I just can't unlink citations!

Can anybody help me with this bug or suggest a workaround?

Thanks very much in advance.
  • Zotero does not support OpenOffice. Install the latest version of LibreOffice.

(They mean LibreOffice — that's a LibreOffice version number.)

@salmonlaw, this isn't something anyone else has reported. Does this happen in a new document as well, or only a specific existing document? If the latter, see Troubleshooting Errors in Word Processor Documents.

You can also try updating to LO 7.2.5 and/or a more recent JDK.
  • Hi there,
I apologize for the delay, I was waiting for an emasil warning that my post was answered and finally decided to go and check...and thank you for your answers.

    @bwlernik,
sorry I hadn't realized that english translation was completely obsolete.

    @dstillman,
yes this happen in a new document as well and I tried to update to 7.2.5 and 7.3.0 as well: same problem.
I think I have the latest openjdk version:
    openjdk 11.0.13 2021-10-19
    OpenJDK Runtime Environment (build 11.0.13+8-Ubuntu-0ubuntu1.20.04)
OpenJDK 64-Bit Server VM (build 11.0.13+8-Ubuntu-0ubuntu1.20.04, mixed mode, sharing)

When I go in Libreoffice to check, I got this as java environnement:
    Ubuntu 11.0.13
I think I have the latest Zotero version for ubuntu (5.0.96.3)

The problem is really strange, the progression bar appears, the warning too (All the citations will be unlike, do you want to proceed anyway), but impossible to click "ok", it freezes and I have to kill everything.
I tried the solutions mentionned here : https://www.zotero.org/support/word_processor_plugin_troubleshooting
nothing works...I think I will have to go back to libreoffice 6 or 5 and older Zotero :-( I will try this on one machine (problem is the same on different computers) waiting for a fix for this bug (if you still have suggestions I will try quickly this time)
  • Update:
    Losing my religion...
    Here's what I just tried:
I tried installing Libreoffice 6.4, no result. Tried 5.4, but was unable to use any java environment, even java 8.
I've been able to make it work with java 8 running and applied in LO 6.4 advanced options, but only using Zotero 4.0 (which has no possibility of syncing!) and older version of the extension .oxt (I played a lot with the extensions to see if this was the problem, but does'nt change anything). Never been able to make Zotero 5.0 work (always crash when unlinking).

And, most surprising, it worked only a few times, now I am not able to make it work anymore even with same configuration (Libreoffice 6.4, old .oxt extension, Zotero 4.0 and java 8) !!!
So now the only solution I see is to use Windows :-( when I need to unlink citations.

Thanks in advance if anyone can help fixing this !
  • I would strongly encourage you not to do these drastic things. If you're going to post here, just let us help you debug it.

I'm not sure why you decided this had anything to do with Java. If you can interact with the plugin, there's no particular reason to think Java is relevant at all.

You should reinstall the latest versions of Zotero and LO and a current JDK. Zotero works fine with JDK 11 in general, but the latest JDK is JDK 17, so if you're able to install a later version, that's worth trying.

But let's take a step back and return to normal troubleshooting. What are the exact steps to reproduce this in a new document?

In any case, if all you need to do is unlink, you can likely do that without the plugin just by saving in a format (e.g., RTF) that doesn't support reference marks.
  • @dstillman:
Thanks for your answer and my apologies for having mentionned drastic solution...you are right, I should let you help me debug !
I just installed jdk 17 and made sure it is selected in advanced options in LO. The only thing that looks to have changed is that I don't have the warning message anymore (but still the progress bar). I still have to kill everything because it crashes.
Saving to RTF is not a good option for me since I need other things to remain operational (links to paragraphs, etc.).

The exact steps to reproduce :
    Insert a Zotero reference in a new document as a footnote;
    Unlink citations using zotero extension.

Do you want me to send additionnal information to helb debugging?
  • Yes, can you start Zotero from the command line and send the output from when it freezes to support@zotero.org with a link to this thread?

    https://www.zotero.org/support/debug_output#logging_to_a_terminal_window
  • @dstillman:
I wasn't able to get an output for the bug. I launched zotero from his folder using "./zotero /zotero -ZoteroDebugText > dbgzot.txt", but the output is empty.
It may be because the word "freezes" may not be the right one: I noticed that now, Zotero sticks to the progress bar and nothing there happens, but I can close this window and close Zotero cleanly. LO really freezes and I have to kill it or force it to close (it's strange, because before all the manipulations I made, both were not responding...but anyway).
Can you tell me any other way to get the log file you need?
  • @dstillman
I finally was able to send the file. I repeat (because I saw in the file that Zotero sent the instruction) that the warning message "La suppression des codes de champ empêchera Zotero de mettre à jour les citations et bibliographies dans ce document. Voulez-vous vraiment continuer ?" never appeared.
    Thank you in advance.
  • You didn't include the file with your email.
  • @dstillman
Sorry for this mistake. It's done now.

And you're sure the dialog isn't appearing behind the main LO window or something?

You can try closing LO and moving your LO profile directory out of the way to see if that helps, since this is an LO problem.

I think we've had a few reports of alerts not appearing, but I don't believe we know the cause. @adomasven might be able to say more or suggest other things to try.

@salmonlaw If Zotero doesn't freeze please produce a Debug ID.
  • @adomasven I followed the instructions but Zotero doesn't want to send the Debug output (or if it does, doesn't give me an ID). I can see there are some recordings numbered in the help menu (597 lines), but when I click on "View Output" there's nothing, and if I save it, the only text I had is "Submit... Clear Submitted with Debug ID" followed by the sign for clipboard ! Do you want me to send a file like I did with dstillman ?
  • Something very weird going on in your installation, but you can log to a terminal window and email it to us at support@zotero.org with a link to this thread.
