Word not responding when trying to add an in text citation

I'm trying to edit a 60 page word document with around 60-70 citations using Zotero 5.0 and Word 16.58. My computer is a Mac running on macOS BigSur 11.6.1.

Anytime I click on the "Zotero" tab through my word doc and click "add/edit citation" my word stops responding (I've allowed it to sit for 10 minutes) and I loose any unsaved work. I've tried turning off tracked changes, and saving a copy of the document and the issue has persisted, but I haven't removed my bibliography pages (https://www.zotero.org/support/kb/debugging_broken_documents).

Why is this happening?
  • Mac Word is unfortunately much slower than on Windows, but it certainly shouldn't take more than 10 minutes for 60-70 citations. In a large document, you should make sure that "Automatically update citations" is disabled in the plugin's Document Preferences window.

Have you tried restarting your computer?

While it shouldn't matter, you should upgrade to at least the latest version of Big Sur (11.6.4).
I haven't removed my bibliography pages
You should remove the bibliography as a test. Unless you've added uncited items, there's absolutely no difference between the one you have now and what you'd get when you reinsert it. The bibliography is just a representation of the citations in the document.
