Better BibTex doesn't work by showing "Better BibTex is loading"!

After updating Better BibTex, I just see "Better BibTex is loading" in Preference window. When I return to some previous versions, the Citation keys of all documents have vanished, and Zotero shows "an error has happed, please restart...."
  • I had a problem with the exact same description a couple of weeks ago, but on only one of my two computers (Mac OS 10.14.6 running latest Zotero beta), otherwise set up in exactly the same way with the other. I realized that it was the order of the addon functionality that showed up in the context menu (upon right-clicking any item in the Zotero main window) that was different between the two installations, which gave me a clue on what may be going on.

I ended up with a workaround by uninstalling the PubPeer add-on on the computer where BBT did not work, which would get BBT to work again. Eventually, the solution for me was to uninstall every add-on for good, restart, and reinstall them in a given order. (I think BBT first.) Everything works now when the context menu shows Better BibTeX first.

I may be completely wrong about this, but I have all my add-ons working now, so it can't hurt to try?

BBT was part of the problem because at some point it loaded chrome://zotero/content/include.js, which it turned out created some kind of race condition in loading the Zotero login. A fair few plugins built off my scaffolding also had that include.js -- it's worth seeing if they do, and removing it for the overlay xuls (which should find it pre-loaded by Zotero).
