General sync error

My institution blocks Zotero from syncing. The gist of the Zotero error message is:

"Your request has been blocked as per XXXX Cyber Security. Update Firefox to ESR 68.4.1 or higher (COE version) or 72.0.1 or higher (non-COE version)."

Has anyone else had such issues where Zotero is recognized as based on an old Firefox build? Is there a workaround?

I am running 5.0.96.3 on Windows 10. Zotero can access internet (View Online works), can check for updates, recognizes when references are added across machines, but cannot sync the associated .pdfs etc.

I have tried restarting Zotero, restarting machine, and a fresh install.

When on my home network, everything works fine.

  • So you're only getting a file sync error, but data syncing is working?

    We can probably fix that, though I'd guess that some other things (Add Item by Identifier, saving from feeds) still might not work. But you should still be able to save from the Zotero Connector.

    (Note that View Online just launches the URL in your default browser, so that's not meaningful here.)

    Thanks for the help. I guess that is how I would describe it. The "metadata" is syncing across machines but not the associated .pdf files.

    I realize the problem is on my side and not with Zotero, but finding a workaround would be great. Simple saving of .pdfs off of journal webpages would be great to get working.

    Please let me know if I can provide any more information. I can post a debug ID if that would be useful.

    Well, wait, is this working or not? You posted about syncing — you didn't mention saving.

    Can you provide some Debug IDs for different operations that aren't working for you?

  • You didn't answer my question — I understand that file syncs are being blocked for you, and we should be able to fix that, but you then suggested that saving wasn't working either.
  • Saving locally is working. Only syncing is generating errors.
  • OK, this might work for you in the latest Zotero beta.

    Again, some other actions in Zotero would likely still be blocked, but file syncing should now work the same as data syncing.
  • I updated to the latest beta. File syncing still does not work, but the error is different now. Any thoughts? Thanks again for the help.
