Saving highlights

Hi guys!
I have an annoying problem. When i highlight important stuff in the PDFs (saved on my hard drive) I press command + s (which should save my highlights) and I close the document and open it again some of the highlights disappear. Sometimes it works and sometimes it don´t. This is obviously not ok. Why does this happen and what can I do about it?

I have a mac with Monterey (it was also a problem with Big Sur). I have the Zotfile plug in installed.
  • You're talking about saving in an external PDF reader, and then closing and reopening the file on the same computer? That wouldn't have anything to do with Zotero.

If you're opening the file on a different computer, and using Zotero file syncing, you'd have to make sure that file syncing was enabled and working properly.
  • I have saved the PDF-file in Zotero and then opened it and started highlighting it. Then I save and when I open it again through Zotero some saves are there and some ar not. The funny thing is is that it is not the last saves that are not there rather random highlights that has been done earlier. Are you suggesting @dstillman that this has nothing to do with Zotero? If not, do you have a clue what is happening?

    Regards, Martin
  • With what program are you opening and annotating the PDF?
  • Apples Preview.
  • When you double-click a file in Zotero, all it does is launch the file via the OS. It's exactly the same as choosing Show File from the item context menu and double-clicking on the file in Finder.

Again, if you're using Zotero on multiple computers, it's possible your files aren't syncing properly, or you're opening a file locally before a remotely updated version downloaded.
  • Read some other threads about this and it seems that some ppl have similar trouble with Preview in on Mac OS. I guess I will have to looka around for a new annotation software. Tanks for responding!
  • If you're referring to forum threads here, that may be a misunderstanding — you should link to the threads so we can say if they're relevant. Again, it's not clear that this is related to Zotero at all, so threads here are likely to be about other issues.

If you mean threads elsewhere, that could point to a more general issue with recent versions of Preview, though of course millions of people use Preview to annotate PDFs.

For what it's worth, note that there's a new built-in PDF reader in the Zotero beta.
