Citation formatting in Google Docs

No matter what font I use in my document's text, citations are always formatted as san serif (arial). How can I ensure that citation fonts are the same as document fonts?

    What citation style are you using? Make sure you update the Google Docs "Normal text" style to use the font that you want.

    Has anyone had citation formatting issues, when collaborating (working on same doc simultaneously) in Google Docs? The font (type/size/highlight) for every new citation added varies wildly.
