zotero on wayland / Linux / Fedora 35 broken

Hello,

I upgraded to Fedora 35 - and since then Zotero and a few other apps do not run anymore.

The common element for the other apps is that they used an outdated version of Electron. I wonder whether Zotero also has not updated its electron base?

My understanding is that electron has a bug that has been fixed upstream, but may not have yet been integrated into Zotero.
https://github.com/electron/electron/pull/31091

I am getting Zotero from flatpak - currently I have 5.0.96.3.

Thanks for Zotero! I use it regularly in teaching, trying to hook on my students to open source reference management.

Cheers
Ingmar

  • Zotero is based on Firefox 60ESR, so you should make sure that works for you without issues.
  • Thank you, I run Firefox 94.0; and have successfully used Zotero until I upgraded.
Can you tell me whether indeed Zotero runs on electron? I briefly searched for information on that, but am not sure.
  • No, Zotero has nothing to do with Electron. It's based on Firefox 60 ESR.

    Ok, thanks a lot. Understood.

Ok, how do I proceed investigating?

When I run Zotero from the shell, I get this
    Gtk-Message: 10:26:57.931: Failed to load module "canberra-gtk-module"
    Gtk-Message: 10:26:57.931: Failed to load module "pk-gtk-module"
    Gtk-Message: 10:26:57.931: Failed to load module "canberra-gtk-module"
    Gtk-Message: 10:26:57.931: Failed to load module "pk-gtk-module"

Now, another question: are you suggesting that the up to date Firefox version is not good enough any more for Zotero?

Firefox 60ESR runs without trouble. / FALSE, see below
  • Sorry, update - just noted that my browser did not download FF 60ESR. Firefox seems to have redirected me to a more current ESR, 91.3.
    Ok, now installed https://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/firefox/releases/60.0.2esr/linux-x86_64/en-GB/

Indeed, 60.0.2esr does not run anymore on my Linux system.
  • That means that Fedora has removed whatever dependencies were necessary for Firefox 60ESR. We are planning to upgrade to a later version of Firefox base, but it won't happen in the very near future, so you will have to figure out how to get that to run on your system, which will in turn make Zotero work too.
  • Thanks, for reference, am continuing to pursue the issue then sidestreamy via https://ask.fedoraproject.org/t/zotero-broken/17994
