To clarify, upgrading is just general advice as a basic troubleshooting step. There was no known problem in earlier versions of Big Sur with current versions of Zotero. This problem did occur during the Big Sur betas in summer 2020, but we fixed that before Big Sur was released, so it certainly shouldn't happen with 5.0.96.3. I think there've been a couple recent reports of this, but we haven't identified a cause, so they're likely system-specific.

If you're running any unusual third-party software, try disabling it. Same if there's anything unusual about your display setup.
Beyond that, the best I can suggest is to try in a new macOS user account and see if it happens there. If not, you'll know that it's something in your existing account that's causing this.
No, a "general problem" would be something that was affecting everyone on macOS, or a large proportion of them. We'd get dozens of reports a day, not a few in the last year. So there's something unusual about your system setup that's triggering this. Since we have no way of reproducing it ourselves, you'll need to do some debugging on your end, of the sort I explain above, to try to figure out the problem.
If you're seeing this, it might be from using a third-party app that changes system Dark Mode settings (or from doing so yourself from the command line). See the fix here:
