Unlinked Citations - Google Docs

Hello,

Every time I reopen my document in Google Docs, on the same computer (PC), Zotero always always adds different unlinked citations...They are never the same as the last time and they keep adding up. My zotero is on and active before I even open Google Docs.

I always take the long road when adding citations. I click the connector and find my citation in the list and add it. So what's the problem?

Please help!

P.
  • I am not sure what you're describing. Can you provide step by step what you do and what happens at each step and what you expect to happen instead?
  • Sure. So I finish working on my document, my citations have been added, one by one, and they're linked and everything is good. The next day, when I reopen the Google Doc, Zotero lists at least 5 citations out of a few hundred, that are not linked anymore. So I relink them, by clicking "edit with Zotero". Everything is fine. But the next day, a bunch of other citations are unlinked again. So I just stopped using Zotero and I think I have no choice just to deal with this at the end of my writting.
  • I wanted to add that the same document will appear as linked at one place but unlinked at another. I do move text bits around. Could the copy paste be the problem?
  • If you move text by dragging then that's what's causing it. Other causes could be your collaborators (if you have any) copying and pasting text without the Zotero Connector. Otherwise if you copy by using hotkeys or Edit -> Copy/Paste then citations should not unlink. If you have Zotero Connector installed and you think that normal Copy-Pasting breaks your citations you should recreate a full step-by-step scenario so that we can debug it.

Zotero only detects unlinked citations when you perform a Zotero command on the document, so citations might be unlinked for a while, but you will not know until you perform a Zotero command (even opening Zotero preferences will reveal unlinked citations). You can use the Google Docs history to see what changes you have done since last citation insert in the document and try to figure out what may have caused them unlinking.
