In a mess with synching, Zotero Storage, multiple PCs

Hi,

I've got myself in a bit of a mess with synching and I'm hoping someone can help.
I had Zotero (5.0.97-beta.33) + Zotfile set up across one desktop PC and a tablet, all working nicely. I then tried to add a laptop into the setup, I thought I'd mirrored all the right settings and preferences from desktop to laptop, but obviously I missed something, because the laptop Zotero library could not locate the files.

I then paid for a Zotero storage plan, disabled Zotfile and converted all the linked files to stored files on my desktop PC. I now have 1) a Web Library without attachments available (just seeing greyed out links); 2) a desktop PC reading properly from local copies of all my PDFs and 3) a laptop kinda sitting on the sidelines with a library but still not reading any PDFs.

What I want is for Zotero Storage to perform the function my Google Drive was performing (I think that's possible?) in holding a central copy of everything, and my desktop and laptop to read from that central library. Any ideas on the right steps to get this happening? I'm now paranoid I'm going to lose data, and I want to make sure I preserve all my PDFs, tags, annotations and get it synched on dektop, web, laptop and accessible via tablet.

This has got me a little beaten....

Thanks!
  • There's never any reason to worry about losing data — you can always make a copy of your Zotero data directory (though it's better to just have a regular automated backup of your entire computer and not worry about individual programs' data).

In any case, either you've fixed this since posting or this is a misunderstanding, because all of your files are available online, and they should be accessible on any synced computer with file syncing enabled. If you're not seeing files on some computers, see Files Not Syncing.
