only the old version of the style of the" Journal of dental research " is available

In the Zotero Style Repository, the style of the Journal of dental research is available.
But the format is old. Now, the Journal uses a new version of citation. Can somebody refresh the style?
Thanks a lot!

JDR now follows the CSE style. Checked via guidelines and current papers.
I'll get it set as a dependent, but you can use this here: https://www.zotero.org/styles?q=id:council-of-science-editors-author-date&format=author-date

    PR for dependent style: https://github.com/citation-style-language/styles/pull/3416
  • Thank you very much !!!! :)
  • It looks very promising!
But the JDR do not include the DOI number at the end of the reference.
THANKS in advance for your help!
  • Style dependency fixed to harvard-cite-them-right now.
    https://www.zotero.org/styles?q=id:journal-of-dental-research
  • Dear Damnation!

The JDR sent back my manuscript becasue the reference style was not ok for them.
Could you please fix the two problem with the JDR style in zotero-style-repository?
    - do not need dots by the name of the journals (instead J. Biol. Chem. , better J Biol Chem)
    -and delet the doi.

And would be better to give an other name of this (new) format in the style-repository, for example: Journal of Dental Research2018.

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!:))

Did you use the ouncil-of-science-editors-author-date (CSE) style I've linked to a month ago?

This is what is says in THEIR guidelines:
    "REFERENCES
The Journal of Dental Research (JDR) adheres to the CSE (8th Edition) editorial style. All submitted
manuscripts should be formatted in this style: http://www.scientificstyleandformat.org/Tools/SSFCitation-Quick-Guide.html."
  • Yes, I do used the council-of-science-editors-author-date (CSE) style.
But this style has the two above mentioned problems.
    Sorry for the inconevnience.
    Thanks!
  • The punctuation in journal titles is indeed incorrect and I've put in a fix.
See example from CSE, 8th ed., manual
Jansen NW, Kant IJ, van den Brandt PA. Need for recovery in the working population: description and associations with fatigue and psychological distress. Int J Behav Med. 2002;9(4):322–340.

    In terms of the DOI:
    Example from manual:
    Online Journal Articles:
Author(s) of article. Date of publication. Title of article. Title of journal (edition). [date updated; date accessed];Volume(issue):location.
    Notes.
    Example:
    Savage E, Ramsay M, White J, Beard S, Lawson H, Hunjan R, Brown D. 2005. Mumps outbreaks across England and Wales in 2004: observational study. BMJ. [accessed 2005 May 31];330(7500):1119–1120. http://bmj.bmjjournals.com/cgi/reprint/330/7500/1119. doi:10.1136/bmj.330.7500.1119.

    @adamsmith and @Rintze
    How should we handle this?
  • @damnation -- I'm not sure I understand the question -- just the fact that this has both URL and DOI?
  • edited April 30, 2018
They give two types of example. One normal journal article with pages and volume and issue, but then also the DOI+URL version. But again that one also has page and volume.
And apparently JDR doesn't want a DOI after normal journal articles. So it's conflicting.
  • I’d say just include the DOI, falling back to URL.
  • I'd say this seems like a divergence between the journal and the CSE style, unfortunately.
CSE, very clearly, indicates they want both URL _and_ DOI. There's an earlier discussion on this, and while it's a terrible idea, it's also completely unambiguous.

The journal, equally clearly, wants neither DOI nor URL. We'll probably need separate styles here. Only question is if there are other journals that use CSE that look like JDR so rather than making a JDR independent we'd add a new CSE variant "(author-date, no DOI)" or so
  • I've emailed the editors to clarify.
If she doesn't get back to me I'll make a custom style without DOI based on CSE.
  • I've just heard back from the editors:
    "Hello,

Based on the Scientific Style and Format, for the 8th Edition of CSE Manual for Authors, Editors and Publishers http://www.scientificstyleandformat.org/Tools/SSF-Citation-Quick-Guide.html which directly link to, the DOI may be included if it is available.:

A DOI (Digital Object Identifier) may be included in the notes in addition to a URL, if available:

    Savage E, Ramsay M, White J, Beard S, Lawson H, Hunjan R, Brown D. 2005. Mumps outbreaks across England and Wales in 2004: observational study. BMJ. [accessed 2005 May 31];330(7500):1119–1120. http://bmj.bmjjournals.com/cgi/reprint/330/7500/1119. doi:10.1136/bmj.330.7500.1119.

Please let me know if you require any additional clarification.

    Regards,"
  • OK, so that means we can leave it as is; great news.
  • dear Damnation
the JDR send me my manuscript back because the reference style was not ok for them.
"As of January 1, 2015, the Journal has adopted the CSE (8th Edition) style of formatting. You have used an incorrect reference format. No other format is acceptable. You must show the ISSUE number as follows: Volume#(ISSUE#):Page-numbers. Your references are not complete without this information. Please reformat your references in the required JDR style. You can download the link to this style in endnote here:
    http://endnote.com/downloads/style/cse-style-manual-8th-ed-name-year "

can you fix this problem please
  • The style already includes the issue number in that format (and as shown in the examples above). So this means that you are missing the issue in you Zotero library data. Check to be sure that the issue is included in the data for each of your Zotero items.
  • I checked my library and the issue is included in the data but it is not mentionned when I choose the automatically JDR style.
I don't know how to fix this
I will enter the issue manually
  • Oh, sorry, I misread the style. It doesn't actually include the issue number for journal articles. It should be updated.
  • Okay, I've submitted a pull request to update the style. You can download it from here in the mean time: https://github.com/bwiernik/styles/blob/b4128d7321f310e3e696b666e10eaeba9e0dcb48/council-of-science-editors-author-date.csl
  • I wanted to follow up on this thread. The JDR style (and the 8th CSE name-date style) from the style repository is being rejected by the journals editorial staff.

They specifically state in the email they sent me that their formatting requirement "does NOT include the DOI numbers in the reference list". Clearly they don't want DOI included anymore so I would appreciate if this style could be updated.
    Thanks

    Hello guys,

I came here after a google search and found someone back in 2018 had the same issue. This is still not fixed and the citation style has not been updated. The journal says the doi should not appear in the new CSE 8th version, and sent me the link to the EndNote download cite.

    https://endnote.com/style_download/cse-style-manual-8th-ed-name-year/

I downloaded the citation style from the github of @bwiernik , but it still shows doi in the references.

    Can someone help!
  • EndNote files don't help here, I'm afraid. It's a completely different system.

I have created an independent style now that omits the DOI.

    https://raw.githubusercontent.com/citation-style-language/styles/162aea4474e21050a99ea9120dbdd306920bddd7/journal-of-dental-research.csl
  • Thank you @damnation! I will try that and let you know how it goes.

  • Hi @damnation, would you be able to create an independent style which follows the example below? It seems like a newer style of JDR?

    For citation:
Arrange the citations in alphabetical order by last name of the first author without numbering. Use "et al." (in italics) when the cited work is by three or more authors. When the cited work is by two authors, use both surnames separated by "and". When citing multiple references by the same author(s) in the same year, use "a", "b", etc. (e.g., Jones, 1980b). Multiple references should be listed in chronological order of publication, separated by semi-colons.

    For bibliography:
(List all authors, but if the number exceeds six, give six authors’
names followed by et al.) West DJ, Snavely DB, Zajac BA, Brown GW, Babb CJ (1990).
Development and persistence of antibody in a high-risk institutionalized population given plasma-derived hepatitis B vaccine. Vaccine 8:111-114.

Abbreviate journal names according to the style used in Index Medicus.

Journal names should be in italics. No DOI.

    Thank you!

  • Where is that information from? I'm not seeing that in current article's by the journal and the author instructions also still specify CSE 8th edition.

This is the guidance from my university for referencing style. Endnote had this layout for JDR except the number of authors listed prior to et al.

@adamsmith @damnation Can anyone help with this?
