link locally stored pdfs to zotero item - automatically

Hi,
I have many pdfs (in some cases previously annotated via acrobat reader) stored on a local path C:\Users\...
I have many items in my zotero library, which correspond to these pdfs.
I want the corresponding attachment links in my library items.

must I do that manually for each zotero item? Or is there a way to do this automatically? e.g. zotero scanns a specified location for corresponding pdfs and links them to the items in the library? I guess some text recognition or OCR would be needed here.

If this question is redundant, I am happy for a redirect. However, I did not find any suitable post yet.

P.S. I could do something like this: select relevant zotero items > find available PDF ; but then I would have new PDFs from the web, but not my annotated pdfs from my local directory, correct?

Best

There's no automatic way to do that, no. The best you can do is add them to Zotero (as either stored or linked files), let Zotero try to retrieve metadata for them, and then use duplicate detection in Zotero to merge them with existing items. Any that weren't recognized you would want to drag onto the existing item.
