Word plugin error on MacOs Catalina

Hi friends. I get this error:
"Zotero does not have permission to control Word. To grant this permission:"
I use these versions:
MacOS Catalina 10.15.7
MS Word 16.47
Zotero 5.0.96.1

I checked all discussions on forum but cant solve the problem.
-With shared code on forum, I added "Terminal" option on Security & Privacy / Privacy/Automation.
-Reinstalled Word addon on Word Processors tab.
-Restart the mac.
-Checked zotoro.dotm
But still cant work with MS Word and Zotero. Anyone here solved this issue?
  • I added "Terminal" option on Security & Privacy / Privacy/Automation
No, you need to allow Microsoft Word, not Terminal. There were some old forum discussions that mentioned Terminal, but that's not what the current dialog says to do:
    1) Open System Preferences

    2) Click on “Security & Privacy”

    3) Select the “Privacy” tab

    4) Find and select “Automation” on the left

    5) Check the checkbox for “Microsoft Word” under “Zotero”

    6) Restart Word

I cant find any other solution. I used this code on Terminal (this code was shared on zotero forums):
osascript -e 'tell application "Microsoft Word" to insert text "hello" at the end of text object of active document'

    And the result is so:

  • OK, but you're sort of skipping ahead here. I'd strongly encourage you to just post your question if you're having trouble instead of running random commands from forum threads in Terminal.

The first thing to do would be to follow the steps in the dialog. Zotero isn't listed there, which is odd. Did you run a tccutil command from some forum thread?

What happens now if you simply try to use the Zotero plugin in Word?
  • yes I tried tccutil reset AppleEvents it too. it's not working.
  • Right, but what happens now if you try in Word?
  • it gives same error. pop-ups a "missing permission" screen and writes this:

Zotero does not have permission to control Word. To grant this permission:
    1) Open System Preferences
    2) Click on “Security & Privacy”
    3) Select the “Privacy” tab
    4) Find and select “Automation” on the left
    5) Check the checkbox for “Microsoft Word” under “Zotero”
    6) Restart Word
  • But nothing gets added to the list in Automation in System Preferences?

Does the same thing happen after restarting your computer?
  • yes. nothing added to settings.
  • The best I can suggest would be to 1) try in another macOS user account or 2) try upgrading to Big Sur. This certainly works in general in Catalina, so if it's not working in your OS user account or on your computer, that's a problem outside of Zotero, and Catalina won't receive further bug fixes from Apple.
  • @ismaily: It probably won't help, but you could also try deleting Zotero from Applications, emptying the trash, and reinstalling from the download page. Maybe that will convince macOS to add it to the security pane. Your data won't be affected.
  • but on same device, other apps can install their permissions on settings page.

  • Have you tried what I suggest above?
  • yes i tried.
-I removed old version, installed zotero 5 and didnt work.
-then i removed again and installed zotero 4 but again it didnt work.
-I removed then ms office and installed old version but not working :)
-I also tested some other apps like mendeley and endnote, and they dont work with office too. maybe the problem is MS Office :)
  • Oh, yes, probably Word, then. If you've already tried reinstalling that (and emptying the trash and restarting in between?), upgrading to Big Sur is the best I can suggest.

Don't try to use Zotero 4 at this point — it's many years old.
  • hi again.
is there a way to add zotero citations manually?
    for example, like this: {zotero:author,date,title}
I want to add manually, after then, when i open word file on another computer, want to see all of citations.
    thanks.
