Style Request: Journal of Comparative Neurology

Hi,
I was wondering if anyone could help with providing a Zotero citation style for The Journal of Comparative Neurology.
Please let me know if there is any additional information I can provide to help with the process.
Thank you for your effort and time in helping with this.
-Robert

Similar style:
The bibliographic style that I am requesting looks very similar to the style for the American Journal of Physical Anthropology.

Differences from similar style:
The Journal of Comparative Neurology has the following differences:
1) There are no periods after the abbreviations of the journal name in the citation
2) There is no “and” before the last author in the list
All of the other aspects of the citations for both journal articles and books appear to be the same.

Link to style guide:
Information on formatting for citations within the text and other details on this journal’s citation format are listed below, as summarized from the journal’s website:
http://www3.interscience.wiley.com/journal/117928903/grouphome/ForAuthors.html
For references cited in the text:
“studies by Sawchenko (2003) reveal”
“studies by Sawchenko and Schiltz (2003) reveal”
”studies by Sawchenko et al. (2003) reveal”

For references that are included at the end of a phrase or sentence in parentheses:
(Canteras, 1999; Holstege and Saper, 2002; Hansen et al., 2003a, 2003b)

The citations in the Literature Cited should be in alphabetical order by authors, then chronological order by year. For papers with identical authors and years, the citations should be alphabetical by journal, and then chronological by appearance in the journal:

Kuroda M, Price JL. 1991a. Synaptic organization of projections from basal forebrain structures to the mediodorsal thalamic nucleus of the rat. J Comp Neurol 303:513–533.

Kuroda M, Price JL. 1991b. Ultrastructure and synaptic organization of axon terminals from brainstem structures to the mediodorsal thalamic nucleus of the rat. J Comp Neurol 313:539–552.

Abbreviations of journal names should conform to Index Medicus.
  • 1) is not possible to adjust in Zotero (explanation to follow),
the other change I'm happy to make for you in the next couple of days,
  • Thanks for the help. Much appreciated.
  • go here:
    http://gist.github.com/169736
use the "Raw" link on the top right to download the file.
install the style by dragging to Firefox and clicking "Yes" to the Install

Please give me feedback here if everything is as it should be and I'll upload the style to the repository.

As for Journal abbreviations: Currently, Zotero just takes whatever is in the Journal Abbr. field. With the implementation of a new csl processor, it will be possible to select between periods and no periods.
In the long-term there will be some type of solution to deal with different Journal abbreviation (lists), but since there is not even agreement on how to implement that, this will take some time.
  • Hello Adam,
Thank you for doing this so quickly. It seems to work fine except for one issue. For citationswithin the text the comma after et al. seems to be included for some references but not for others. I don't know if this is an issue with the CSL file or if it just has to do with how the reference information was originally downloaded from the different journals' websites.
    Thanks again.
  • to make sure I understand this correctly, can you give two examples?
This seems surprising and should be consistent across citations.
  • My mistake. I'm not sure what the cause was the first time I updated the styles but I just deleted and reentered my references and the formatting came out fine this time. Looks like everything is working fine.
    thanks again for the help.
  • glad to hear - enjoy
  • forgot about this. Journal is now in the repository.
