Zotero Integration Error on Mac (Big Sur 11.2.3)

Report ID: 536695207

Since updating Big Sur yesterday, I have not been able to add citations to new documents or existing ones that functioned earlier that day. I have restarted Word, Zotero and my Macbook but with no success.

The error message reads "Zotero experienced an error updating your document."
  • [JavaScript Error: "The operation couldn't be completed. (OSStatus error -1712.) @[activate:document.m:140]" {file: "file:///Applications/Zotero.app/Contents/Resources/extensions/zoteroMacWordIntegration@zotero.org/components/zoteroMacWordIntegration.js" line: 404}]
What's the full, exact version of Word?
  • Microsoft Word for Mac. 16.46 (21021202)
  • OK, @adomasven will need to look into this.
  • Could you produce a Debug ID from Zotero for a failing operation?
  • 1546427139 I'm having the same kind of error on Big Sur 11.2.3. Same version of Word: 16.46
  • @petros32 Could you also produce a Debug ID (see link above)?
  • @petros32 You seem to have copied the Debug ID wrong. Could you produce another one and post it here?

@petros32: That seems to be a Report ID, and you just added a "D" in front of it. A Debug ID is something different, and it will actually give you the number with the "D" — see the instructions.
  • @sadekkessous Could you give details on what happened when generating that Debug ID? Did you select a reference and then nothing happened for a while before seeing an error?
  • @adomasven I went to add a citation in Word. The quick reference toolbar opened in Zotera. I located the correct source and pressed enter on my keyboard. The toolbar, which normally closes, was stuck as a solid red bar with no change made to the word doc. After sometime I then got the error that detailed above.

    Didn't read instructions properly!
  • I have the same problem as sadekessous.

@sadekkessous @petros32 What Macs are you using? Does it help if you switch the active window to Word entering the citation in the citation dialog?
  • @adomasven Macbook Pro M1 2020. No luck switching to Word as active window after entering the information on Zotero.
  • I've got a similar issue with same version Word for Mac, however add/edit bibliography is the problem. When clicking add/edit bibliography on the plugin Word just opens the main Zotero program and does nothing, despite citation links in the Word doc being fine. Followed troubleshooting guidance and no luck (duplicated doc/ copied and pasted/ replaced citations/ reinstalled plugin/ restarted programs and laptop multiple times), still won't add bibliography and no sign that it is trying to, no error message.

    Debug code is D1057139776
  • IMac 2017. I think my problems come from the fact that I'm working with a very big document. I've just opened a new Word document and everything is OK with Zotero-citations, biblio. etc. I can add a new citation and a bibliographical list to the big document but it takes a very long time to respond. I've taken out all the old bibliography from it so it's not trying to update everything. My computer is an iMac 2017. Switching windows doesn't make any noticeable difference,

I am having a similar issue with Word for Mac 16.46, Big Sur 11.2.2, M1 MBP.

It happens to me when I attempt "Add/Edit Citation" in the Zotero tab in Word. A pop-up window from Zotero opens that says "Zotero Integration Error". I have updated Zotero, turned off track changes and disable markups, saved the document to a different folder locally (not to OneDrive), tried deleting the bibliography and all the other steps in "Troubleshooting Errors in Word Processor Documents".

This is what I do to get the error:

    1. Start Zotero,
    2. Start Word,
    3. Open File or start a new document,
    4. Click on Review tab to verify track changes is turned off and to disable showing markups,
    5. Click on Zotero tab, and
    6. Click on Add/Edit Citation.

Zotero Displays the message in a pop-up window "Zotero Integration Error".

In Word, I noticed that if I go into Word>Preferences and select "Ribbon & Toolbar" that the Zotero tab is absent from the Main Tabs list. Similarly, if I navigate to Insert>Add-ins>My Add-ins... Zotero is absent from my list of add-ins. If I instead select "Get Add-ins..." and search Zotero, no results are displayed.
  • Based on everyone's report logs and provided details it seems that you are all having errors with different causes that will need to be troubleshooted separately, so I'll give individual instructions below.

@lrevie Restart your Mac and try again. Make sure you allow Zotero time to insert the bibliography. It might take a while. It might help if you keep Zotero and Word windows on display while Zotero works. If you still have the problem please start a new thread and detail what you have done and what happened.

@petros32 Big documents can cause problems like that. If you can, break up your document into individual chapter documents and work on them separately then recombine in the end. It might help if you keep Zotero and Word windows on display while Zotero works. If you still have the problem please start a new thread and detail what you have done and what happened.

@phaneuft Restart your Mac and try again. If you still see the issue please submit a Debug ID and create a new thread. The fact that the Zotero tab doesn't show up in various Word preferences is normal. If you cannot reproduce the issue in a new document you will need to follow step 10 of the troubleshooting instructions.

@sadekkessous Do you see this problem in a completely new document or only in existing documents? If it's only in existing documents can you follow the document troubleshooting steps, particularly step 10 to try and isolate the problematic part of the document?
  • Thanks very much for the helpful comments
  • Yes, thank you, the issue has been resolved.
  • @adomasven Unfortunately, I'm having the issue in new documents as well.
  • Do you run any security software on this Mac? Have you tried disabling it? Does it help if you make sure that both Zotero and Word windows are visible on screen? Does inserting citations ever succeed or does it fail every time?
  • It fails every time. For a short while, I could add citations to new documents but now that no longer works either. Both windows are open on the same desktop and both are visible. I don't have any security software installed apart from a malware monitor, which disabling makes no difference.
